What's The Secret To Removing The Wiper Motor Filter Without Damaging It?

I am about to put a pipe wrench on it and go all caveman, but I am pretty sure I can render it un-re-useable (being brass it is pretty soft).

I don't begrudge Jim K the profit on one of his reconditioned filters, and as a last resort I will buy one and pay shipping and core charge to get it.
But I would rather not spend that much logistical effort, not to mention more of my favorite dollars, to get one.

Anyone?

I laid my small Stilson on it and it backed out nicely. didn't leak after replacement, so I don't think I deformed it.

I guess the same as a "Crescent" wrench is an adjustable wrench because the Crescent tool company sold the most of them. And Kleenex is nose blowing
tissue...

Anyway, going caveman on it with a pipe wrench is a last resort. Looking for other suggestions less likely to damage it.

It is just a piece of brass tubing, threaded at each end, stuffed with some
metallic gauze filtrating medium. you are going to put some teeth marks on
it removing it, file them off, or leave them alone. locate the wrench close
to the wiper motor for best results.

Thanks Jim. I will try two wrenches 90 degrees apart. Maybe that will minimize teeth marks and deformation.

Wrap a piece of leather or thin,tough rubber around it to protect it from
the Stillson wrench & honk away!

​(Better yet, throw the whole antique monstrosity away and install my
electric wiper kit! :-) )​

Try putting a piece of leather such as an old belt over it before using the pipe wrench. A piece of canvas can also work.

Or just try a strap wrench. No worry on teeth marks.

The strap wrench I had wasn't "sticky" enough to grip it. A small pipe wrench didn't want to fit very well in the space, so it took a dozen small
increments with it to get the filter loose enough to turn it with channel locks, and then by hand.

Off, cleaned, and back on in a jiffy.
