What's in the ceiling above LH front coach window?

I'm going to try and put a small shelf, big enough to hold a VCR and perhaps
a DSS receiver above the window on the LH side. Or, alternatively I could
mount it right to the ceiling. I want to get it up high so that it's out of
the way and not wasting space above the VCR/DSS.

I've never looked in there and am wondering if anyone has mounted stuff to
the ceiling and if so where, so that I don't have it falling down in time.

I mounted my CD changer up there above/behind the drivers seat and it's been
happy there for a few years, but it's not as heavy as the VCR would be :-)

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated.

Another thing you might consider...the building supply stores sell
ultrasonic stud finders in the $20 range that work extremely well. They
sense the change in density behind the substrate; once you get used to
interpretting them you can locate just about anything behind the wall, or,
in this case, headliner.

I thought about this, Heinz, and would also like to create a full
width(length) shelf of heavy enough, upholstered, ply, . I believe it
could be deep enough to hold most electronics and would be most likely
mounted where the sun visiors are and on both sides. I would then attache
the sun visors, mirror bracket and drapery hardware to the bottom.

I tried making a template to ensure a snug fit along the curvature but
never finished it.

I would be happy to follow you!

Good Luck,

David,
You've added a new veggy to the stew.
Hadn't even thought about the visor area much. ( Now here's another cottage
opportunity :-)

I'm going to ponder that some before proceeding with on the side window.

Thanks for the suggestion/input

Heinz

David. I made a template for the same thing and attached it the way you
describe. I made my shelf out of 3/16 aluminum. By bending the aluminum up at
whatever distance out you want, the aluminum itself acts as a support for the
shelf where your radio an whatever is mounted. You need two templates to do
it this way. One for the front and one for the top where the bend goes to. I
had the head liner out so a good attachment was accomplished without guessing
where it could be mounted to. It was also easier to route new wiring through
the ceiling space from speakers and power. I wrapped the shelf in the same
upholstery as the head liner. I think it looks pretty good. This maneuver
gave me more room to make my own dash panel with gauges of my choice and more
variety for placement. Darren
