What MH to get if not GMC?

Ken,
You haven't been listening on the net long enough. There are no SOB's worth
having other than the GMC. PERIOD. One thing I've learned is none of them,
even Prevost, makes a better coach. They are just 25 year old works of art
and need to be treated with care. And, as a gift, you have the GMCNet to
help with any problems you MIGHT have.

These guys/gals got me trained real good. {:>)

When you went to get your wife, assuming you are married, an engagement
ring, did you consider getting an opal? No! Only a diamond will do. Same
with the GMC and this assessment is from one who's still looking for his
first one.

Flame Started. Those old cheap motor home you mentioned are large boat
anchors. Where do you get parts for any of them. Do you own a machine shop
to fabricated anything that breaks? Do you plan on doing all your traveling
in your driveway? I have confidence that you'll find a way to get a real
motor home.

This may seem an odd question but after lurking on the list I'm not sure I
can afford to buy and properly maintain a GMC the way I would like to. I
respect and somewhat understand the reasons many of you have chosen GMCs but
what other older MH would you consider if GMCs were not an option? I'm fond
of 70s Travco, Apollo, and Executives in about 27'-28' and the older Revcons
also. I have seen some pretty nice examples under $8K and no GMCs in that
range that didn't need some costly attention.(GMCs are so darn good looking
though!)

I don't have personal experience with any of the other brands you mention, but back in the 70's when
we were shopping for motorhomes and decided on the GMC, we ruled most of them out for various
reasons.

The big reason was that most of them are trucks with a camper body hung on. The GMC is purpose built
as a highway cruising, comfortable living coach.

Don't let all the problems you read about here scare you. These coaches have some special needs,
which you will have the advantage of knowing about before hand, but are no more or less problematic
than any 25 year old vehicle.

About the only thing I would consider other than a GMC is a regular panel van and a tent. I could
never go back to one of those big truck body units. Just couldn't do it. Good luck to you and I hope
you find what you are looking for.

Interesting question. I might choose an FMC.......but, I would expect to
have more problems getting parts for the FMC-only 1,076 made and I
suspect the same with the other orphan brands!

Think I would buy the GMC. They may be making them again so parts will be
even more plentiful!

Let's not drink bath water here. Contrary to what we sometimes think, there
are other older motor homes out there worth considering. If I were to do it
over again, I'd take a serious look at an FMC. MUCH better snow vehicle
than a GMC. I don't think anyone could honesty argue that traction in
slippery conditions is the strong suit of the GMC. The GMC was the Jaguar
of motorhomes but the FMC was the Rolls Royce. As well built as a GMC,
almost as low slung, but with more room and storage. On the other hand, if
you can't afford a GMC, you definitely can't afford an FMC. And both had
the driving wheels at the same end as the engine. Nuff said...

Do you mean the WMC version of the GMC? Or someone else?

By the way I was at Cinnabar yesterday and they are building a new addition.
Not sure of the size, but easily 50% of their existing building. I was told
it was for parts storage. Good news for us for continued access to official
GMC parts.

That is good news. Also, Zeb Frady (Southland GMC) is moving into his
super new facility in Buford, GA this month. He also plans a huge parts
storage area not to mention he can service 12 GMCs or 4 SOBs at once!

production facility. Who knows?
