I think I'm going to quit worrying about this one.
Seems just too many variables, i.e. fresh engine vs 100k, who built it, etc.
etc.

I'm certainly not going to pull the engine just to get at the pan/oilpump,
etc. so hopefully the synthetic will do some good even without oil pressure
to at least get me to the next off-ramp :-) or maybe I'll be lucky enough to
be close to home.

One way to find out if those stories are true... i.e. running out of
oil(pressure) and thankfull that it was synthetic. :-) I used 15w40 pre
Synthetic and will have a look to see if synthetic 20/50 is available in our
neck of the woods now instead of just 5/50. The current Mobil 1 (15/50)
supply will get me home at least.

Thanks for all the replies.

Heinz, easiest way to check is to put straight 30 weight oil in it for one
oil change and notice the pressure. If it goes up, the synthetic you are
using has to low a viscosity at the low end. Remember when discussing
synthetics the viscosity index as used in Dino oils is different. If it were
my engine I would probably check the oil pump if you are getting
consistently low readings. If it is still low I would just use the
synthetics and drive it.

however when I got another engine I would make sure that it was built to
Mondello specs. I have his Oldsmobile V-8 engine technical reference manual
and it is worth much more than the $24 he charges. Chuck full of tips for
the 455. When you got done you would have the recommended oil pressures and
a long life dependable engine. Ask Dave Greenberg how good a Mondello
engine is.

Dave,
How many miles on your Mondello?
