Looking to purchase my second GMC --- hmmm must have got the bug
bad - I have a '73 Painted Desert style 3

It's a great deal -- '76 Royale rear bath 89k from OKLAHOMA
- --but puchased and moved to florida - been sitting a couple of
years -- but started and run for a few hours every other month.
Still has the factor black paint on almost all of the rails
- --(thank god--was stored inside for most of it's life)

Paint is white -- but an somewhat moldy

did most of the checkout today --

appliances work A/C gas/elec refer etc

front end mostly solid -- some work to do

bogis good -- have to replace tires and bag - the bags are so
torn up i can not believe they are still holding air

Cylinder pressures 165 lbs -- for all 8

but

The oil pressure gauge was erratic and somewhat low.
i Replace the oil filter and put in 6 quarts of castrol 20w
- -50

replaced the oil pressure sender with one for a '76 olds 455
- --got it at napa -- oil pressure is very low on idle

then bought mechanical oil pressure gauge (but the range was 0-
100 lbs (going back tomorrow to exchange it for a 0-60lbs gauge)
- -the oil pressure at 600 rpm idle about 10 lbs -- rev it up it
very quickly goes to 35 -40 lbs -- is this normal

Did i make a mistake asking for a standard olds gauge sender
- --(yep its a gauge sender not a switch)

should i have asked for what is called for in the parts exchange
manual -- napa 60lbs -- op6636 or the napa 80lbs op6638 or
the standard 80 lbs ps-157 -- i am confused ( as usual)

what with this 60 - 80 lbs switch --different gauges ???

10# at idle is ok and 10# per 1000 rpm is the rule of thumb.

That's good news... then my 23-25lbs at 2450 in the hot desert ain't so bad.

Heinz

In my opinion 23-25 # of oil pressure should be at idle if you want an
engine that is going to last. 23-25# at 2450 RPM you are asking for
trouble. I will bet that you are using a 10W-30 oil in your engine.

Nope, that's Mobil 1 15/50
Changed from Castrol 5/50 just to see if there is a diff... seems not.

Any solutions short of pulling engine?

I wonder how may variations of actual pressures we'd get if everyone put a
mechanical gauge on :-)

For the olds 455 I think that 15 bottom end oil weight is to low. According
to Mondello he would use nothing below 20W/50. the large size of the main
bearings ab0ut 3" and .002-.003 bearing clearances, oil at 190-250 degrees
F cannot fill the bearing area fast enough at idle with 15-50 oil. If you
have hydraulic lifters that bleed down to fast that compoounds the problem.
Modello says you should have a minimum of 20-25# at idle although he prefers
35-45 At full throttle the minimum should be 40-45# although he prefers
55-65
