What ever happened to "top" answers?

What ever happened to the once tacit agreement to answer/reply at the top rather than bottom?

Those of us who prefer the email manner of trying to keep up with the gmc world have to go down to the message portion, read, then go back to the listings to move to the next message even when it would be perfectly readable from the preview pane. Not only is it inconvenient and aggravating and when reading through the 50 or more messages per download, it consumes about twice as much time.

Oh yeah, just my two cents worth, complaint of the day, whatever. Thanks for reading.

Thimk (think) about it. (You know, the old "Plan ahead, thimk about it!" idea.

If my email program was not displaying or using the email information correctly for my needs, I would try a different program for email, or use the
forum which is much more convenient and has lots of features that email doesn't have.

Hello Jesse
> What ever happened to the once tacit agreement to answer/reply at the top rather than bottom?

to reply on top of a message has, in my world, always been frowned upon.
If you read something, you want to read it in succession.

The main issue is, at least imho, that people don't just quote the small
part of the mail that is relevant, but the whole message. I *try* to
only quote what's necessary, but sometime, especially when I am not on a
real keyboard, I don't. But during those times I mostly just write on
top, or as it is said in German: ToFu - Text oben, Fullquote unten.

That's an issue of the gateway between forum and email, not an issue
with email mailing lists per se.

@Johnny,

Was that a pro forum response? Most of the messages I receive are very
well threaded as well.

@All: Can you guys tell, I am very much pro eMail :-D

Advantages of forum vs email:

- ALL posts in each thread are complete and in order.
- Can choose to look at threads that are of interest
- Have search capability into past posts/treads
- Photos can be imbedded
- Rich text is enabled (Bold, italics, underline, font, text size, etc
- Email box is not filled up with a jillion emails
- Clicking on the arrow beside the last post takes you to the last post
- The number of replies in each thread is shown
- Posts/Treads are preserved for posterity
- Quoting previous comments in order to reply directly to the person making the comment/question is easy even if it was many posts back in the thread
as opposed to making a comment in response to a post several back and no one in God's green earth has any idea what you were talking about.
- Trimming quotes to the relevant words is so simple a University of Alabama graduate can do it...with training. :)
- Probably more, these are off the top of my head

Advantages of email over forum:

- You can download email and read off line if you're smart enough to set up the protocols
- You can file relevant posts/threads in sub directories that mimic the archival inherent in the forum
- Your mailbox is so full of posts you overlook that email you got from your tax accountant telling you your refund is $20,000.

Peer,

The forum uses cookies that keep track of what postings I have already read, shows me all the stats of each particular posting, and provides a good
format for private messages. I can also access the GMCnet without having to put email on my phone and it lets me use anybody's computer or smartphone
to check or post to the latest developments in the GMCnet community. The different colored icons quickly inform me of any new postings to old topics
and the last posting icon takes me right to the latest posting without having to scroll through every post on a particular topic.

Then there is the search function that is very handy when looking for yesterday's or yesteryears information, which is not present in my email program
(I use the Thunderbird email program in the Seamonkey browser).

eMail pros for me (apart from the stuff written by Kerry):
* I have a threaded archive offline available on my computer
* Only threads with unread messages are displayed (but all are available
with a change of view).
* Using a web frontend I can access my email from any computer
* Automatic filtering puts all GMCnet messages into a single folder
* All mail reading can be done using the keyboard, which is a gazillion
times faster for me that utilizing any form of pointing device

The think about downloading and offline reading that Kerry mentioned is
my main pro factor together with the keyboard usability.

I am happy that we have both, even though it means that the mail users
sometimes get a broken thread or no direct access to embedded pictures,
but the advantage to cater to both types of people is very helpful.
