Since Tuesday we've been camped at FD Roosevelt SP, Pine Mountain, GA.
SHE's attending the state garden club convention at nearby Callaway
Gardens, on of GA's top tourist attractions.

I live 30 miles from here 65 years ago, so on Tuesday I went "down memory
lane". Most of the dirt roads (where I got a ticket for underage driving)
are now paved. But the last 2.5 miles to where we lived on Goat Rock Lake
(Chattahoochee River) are the roughest I've EVER been on -- definitely only
for dry weather travel. Not much left of what I remember, and all now
POSTED land (and road). Still as desolate as it was in 1952 though.

By the way, Daddy and I lived there in a "travel trailer", so my experience
goes back that far. :-) :-(

Ken, tough to go back to our remembered pasts. Things change, some gradually, others very fast. I'm hoping that when the developers finish destroying
all the pecan groves here, they leave one tree as a memorial.

Most of my childhood was spent growing up in a small (225 souls)
logging/agricultural town in Washington State. On State Hwy 12. Wide spot
in the road on a 2 lane highway. Named Salkum. Indian name. Interprets as
either falling or boiling waters. Tall, Old growth Douglas Fir forests, all
cut down now. Town dried up when the timber was all cut, sawmills all
closed in the 1950's. Still a post office there, and a general store,
couple of gas stations, a tavern or 2, a community church or 2, maybe a
motel left, I don't know. Cemeteries are fuller now than when I left there
in 1958.
Vanishing way of life in America.
Some say, you can't go home again. Maybe they are right, but who can
say for sure?
It is my 4th anniversary with Judy today. Life is good. I don't regret how
my life has played out so far. I have my GMC and money enough to put gas in
her tanks.
Still lots of America I haven't seen yet, and a whole bunch of GMC
owners we haven't met face to face. Hang in there Colonel Ken.

Ken, I grew up in a different Harris County (Houston), and trips down
Memory Lane are more like oozing parking lots called Memory Freeway. But I
still get a glimpse and maybe a thrill of deja vu when I see something
remembered amid all the new.

For us, the travel trailer was a VW Campmobile. But we didn't live in it.

We were down that way last May. Stayed at Pine Mountain RV Resort and my parents and one of my nephews stayed right next to us in a cabin. Not a bad
RV resort, but I was confused as the older, cheaper areas were nicely shaded while the new, expensive larger spots were just out baking in the sun.
Seemed odd to have priced it that way.

Callaway Gardens was nice, but we had the most fun at the local drive through safari. Went first thing in the a.m., rented a van and bought a jug of
feed. The kids about laughed themselves out of the van getting slobbered on and the adults about laughed our way out of the park at the piece of
garbage they let you drive around in there. That van had no brakes and only one gear, and it only moved at all if you floored it. The whole thing was
hilarious.

My wife and I spent time at FD Roosevelt SP park last spring after the Dothan rally. We were very impressed with Georgia. The large pines reminds me of the trees in the Sierra Nevadas where we live now.
Plus Savannah is a must for everyone. You can park overnite right downtown at the visitors center and walk across the parking lot and jump on the tour trolley.

Gary,

I hope Y'All made it to Callaway Gardens and the "Little White House" while
here. If not, they're worth a return trip. And we're only 81.7 miles
away, so stop here too. :-)

Ken,
We did see the Little White House and golfed at Callaway Gardens.
Also fulfilled a bucket list item with seeing the XR71 Blackbird at the Air Force museum at Macum.
Great State. Hidden Treasure.
