$5.00 core charge. Bought one as a spare.

Emery et al,

When I posted the message about the Water Pump I was choosing there were
reasons for it. My GMC has about 75k miles although mechanically good I
felt that before they went I wanted a Timing Chain, Water Pump and gasket
set on hand so any trip I take this summer would not strand me waiting for
parts someplace. Changing those while in a Campsite would certainly be
easier then searching for parts. I tried the Eaton source but they no
longer carried the 4 and a quarter inch impeller version, Gateway has a
rebuilt for about $73 or $78 plus core charge. GMCMI lists a TRW (Carter)
1524HD as a replacement and some on the Net mentioned this as the core used
by Mondello although with a different impeller. Someone else has mentioned
the potential for less heat transfer with the increase in the number of fins
on some Water Pumps (8 vs. 6 on the TRW ). Finally a $50 cost for a NEW
Pump was too much to pass on. As Arch would say "It works for me".
I do appreciate the comments and discussion but back to that method of
cooling that bottle of Brew...

Hi Paul,
Saw your post on the Auto Zone water pump I had checked with them first,
they had three models for HD applications. Top model was about $75. but it
was special order only that was a new one. Next in price was rebuilt with
"Lifetime Warranty " required a core charge and was a very rough casting.
Third I believe 90 day Warranty and also core charge. I believe there is
never a core charge with new outright purchases. However perhaps each
AutoZone has different policies and suppliers. The TRW(Carter) I bought is
new and should work for me,I really would not want to replace it even if it
is under Warranty.

P.S. Spoke with the supplier for the OTC Puller, Fred Kepper, there was a
mixup on number of units actually in stock from his Distributor (enough vs
none), Fred was very upset. A message was left subsequently with my son
that it was shipped on Friday!
