I finished replacing the worn out timing chain and sprockets this
evening. Put on my spare water pump that doesn't leak. New
thermostat. Modified my fan shroud so I can remove only the lower half. I
was very surprised when I didn't have even one little seep of coolant or
oil when I cranked her up. (knock on wood)

I realized when I was cleaning and putting my tools up that I never had to
open the "M & M" drawer! Every bolt had a good 'ol American size head on
it. I'm very thankful for that. It's just a little thing, I guess. But
it means a lot to me.

I don't want the old water pump to get away from me. It's one with the
cast 4.25" impeller. Has anyone been able to get these rebuilt and make
sure that you get your original back?

I"ll have pictures of the shroud modification posted soon. It sure was
nice to be able to install it in two pieces and get rid of all that extra
iron.

It went fine once I turned the box over and found the instructions
concerning the 3 different timing marks glued to the bottom. :-) That
old chain looked like it was ready to go at amy moment.

Billy,

Steve Ferguson had posted the name of a place in California that rebuilds
pumps for the collector car crowd - important to them to have the original
parts too. Don't have my little notebook with me at work. If Steve
doesn't post it again before tonight, i'll look it up when I get home.

Hmm, I guess it's NOT the correct one then. It's exactly the same as the
top picture on the water pump page. 4" cast iron impeller with 6 paddles
under a backing plate. Has the letter A on it and the number 4 but not
D24. Also has the number 31290 cast into it. Are these common? I'm still
hesitant to let it get away.

I just don't know. That picture is the one that came off of my engine,
and I kept it for the same reason..... But the text at the tomp of the
page was from someone else and had all of those numbers..... like I say, I
have never seen one of those.

Billy,

Let us know how much they charge. I've still got the original off my engine
too. Pretty sure that just the seal is bad - no play in shaft, but it
squirts water out the weep hole :o(

Interesting... Pretty sure mine looks just like the one on Gene's page too.
Maybe we're on the verge of busting another myth? I'll pull mine out of the
box this evening and check it. IIRC, the pump I installed(from Ray Curtis)
was identical to the one I removed. I didn't measure the impeller(didn't
even occur to me), but I remember it being the same size. I've got the
GMCMM article somewhere(it's the reason I ordered the pump from Ray) - need
to look at it again too.
