It has nothing to do with the valves. It is usually detonation, ie.,
premature igintion of the fuel/air mixture and rapid, explosive
detonation rather than a controlled burn. You can do a number of things
to control it. The easiest is to use cooler burning fuel as in higher
octane rating. These fuels contain less energy and burn slower. You
can also retard ignition, cool the intake charge, lower compression or
change fuel mixture. Newer engines do all this all the time.
