You write below about the oil and turbulance in the valve covers. This
is exactly why Mondello recommends oil restrictors in the bottom end as
well as line boering.
I agree and I remember reading that Arch was planning on installing oil
restricters. There is still a dense oil mist floating around inside the
valve covers and without the baffles it gets sucked into the PCV. The
baffles are probably .50cents worth of tin and two self tapping machine
screws, good insurance plus every factory valve cover has them, even on
the roller motors that have factory installed restricters. By the way, I
have used numerous cast valve covers, including the ones carried by
Jegs, (Holley/M/T)and the bosses for the baffles are there. Just drill
a couple holes in them & mount the baffles ensuring appropriate
clearance between the rocker arms & the baffle. (Measure the old ones
for a reference).
Line honing and line boring is not necessary on all blocks. On the
blocks that experience core shift, honing will sometimes correct, on
drastic core shift, line boring is a must. It's a very simple thing to
check but most shops will do it as a matter of course (& charge the
customer) rather than fit the crank & test or measure the line bore for
alignment.
A lot of these engines have stayed alive a long time without any of
Mondello's refinements (tricks). I would not disassemble a good running
engine with healthy vital signs just to add these refinements. However,
having said all this, I would incorporate them into any rebuild based on
the experience of a guy like Mondello. After all, he was one of my
teenhood idols.
About a nickles worth.
Day on the air bag pickup by UPS, no show!
