Vacuum Pump, brakes and a bad idle

My .02 worth --

I was never happy with the idle of our '77 Kingsley when we got it. Replace
all the vac hoses, squirt tested the intake manifold gaskets, the whole 9
yards.

At the same time, I always thought the brake pedal effort was too high.
Didn't seem like any GM product I'd ever had (and there have been dozens).
Being the true blue, full blooded GMC'er that I am, rebuilt the carb,
rebuilt the heater - A/C control, cruise control transducer, everything
possible to eliminate what had to be a vacuum leak. Finally just resigned
myself that this cam in this engine just had bad low RPM vacuum
characteristics. Just had to be!

Flash forward about 3 years. Picked up some road shrapnel in the radiator on
our way back from the Auburn Cord festival. While taking the radiator out
for R&R, my brother-in-law tugged on the vacuum line that went to the
booster. It pulled right in two! Had a 1/4 hole where it was pinched by the
body.

Put the whole she-bang back together with a new hose, and you know what
already.... Great idle quality, feather touch brake pedal effort and
acceptable brakes.

Sometimes its the simple things....
