"Question: Would a person be better off to by a "good"
GMC that looks like everything has already been done
to it?

OR: Would a handy person be better off buying a
cheaper, original with low miles(50,000) that you know
you are going to have rebuild the frontend soon,
timing chain the engine or more, etc....? "

Depends.

GOOD GMC
If the "good" GMC is reasonably priced then it would be
difficult to do it yourself for the same price, however,
unless you really know the history, it can be difficult to
tell if things were really done the way you think they were.

When I was looking some of the GMC's I saw were just
cosmetic fixes, priced as if they were actually "good".

If you find a truly good one, done the way you want,
then this could be a really good way to go.

CHEAPER ORIGINAL GMC
With the cheaper, original, low milage unit you would be
creating your own history and would really know what
you have. Probably more expensive in the end. But if
you can't find a truly "good" one.........

In my case, I didn't find the truly "good" GMC I was
looking for so it was a cheaper original GMC. I have
spent a lot of time (and money) and so far the cosmetics
don't look like I have done anything. In other words I
have barely started.

Even some of the low milage units, depending on where
and how they were used and cared for have bad
frames. Some things I don't want to fix so I didn't go there.

People ask me when I will be finished and the answer is
"hopefully never", but when I use the unit I think I know
what I have. So far it seems to be working for me.

Like I said "Depends".
