Thx Dave - like I was saying off list, I often think that my sources locally are not entirely accurate as their experience of the USA was in a much more unhappy and violent time.. But I wanted to ask as I haven't done any road trips into the states like this ever and you can never have enough opinions on travel experience.. I run the central Canadian corridor a lot and have been to Reston Virginia once on biz and stuck to I-95 all the way back to Canada.. But no camping south of Lake Champlain ever..
Your advise is to head further south before heading west in March? I was thinking somewhere just south of Virginia - then across from there.. Of course, we are literally spinning young Jamie's school globe and looking for mountain features right now (trying to avoid big climbs and higher icy ranges).. Once I get a handle on the topography - we were going to review roads and potential campsites..
I gather that the private campgrounds are better visits there than here - especially southern ones - which makes sense as they would have a much longer season, generally lower taxes and a bigger customer base then we do here.. As long as it isn't more than half the price a reasonable hotel room - we are interested!.. I have a copy of 'trailer life' coming in from chapters - but any recommendations would be welcomed..
We are likely to head for Yarmouth for the weekend, short form campground report to follow.. It is the main port of entry to Nova Scotia for ferry traffic from Portland and Boston it might be of use for people who are heading here using ferry option..
