Unknown electrical component

Wow, three posts in one day!

I was working in the fuse box area behind the glove box and saw a large heat
sink (just to the right of the fuse panel)
with two power transistors mounted on it. A flat multicolored ribbon
cable came off the heat sink and ran towards the driver side, behind the Air
Level Switches. The ribbon connector was not connected
to anything. Anybody know what this is?

I'm guessing here, as it has been a while since I poked around back there,
but I believe this is the power amp for the original equipment in dash 8
track player. Ours died years ago, so I haven't played with it in many
moons. Like I said, I may be way off, so lets wait for the real experts to
chime in!

Ours worked until last year and we had the COOP take it out and
enlarge the opening, to take a new SONY CD-TAPE and radio unit. that
and new speakers, made a world of difference. sound quality is a vast
improvemnt, mow we need to get out on the road and see if the long distance
radio reception is as good as it was with the old 8 track. :)

Our 8-track did not have the external box on the fire wall.

Sorry man, I was supposed to take that out! That is the power output
transistors from the origional radio. It was the premiun sound package
with "high power". The big old power sucking transisters that they used
back then would have turned the radio case into a heater so they remote
mounted them.

Yank it out and fill the nearest trash can. Of course, you could call the
Smithsoniam but I thing they too would agree that its not much worth keeping!

The 8 Track is alive and well in the 77 Eleganza, and it works with the
cassette adapter I bought on ebay!

Before I knew better, I trashed one that was working. The PO even threw in
2 boxes of tapes, also gone. (Probably still sitting in the thrift store).

I think that I have both the 8-track and the power booster in the
basement. I presume that they work.
