I believe there should be some consideration for balance and design in the
layout. There are also other considerations, such as convenience,
visibility, etc.
When I took a look at my panel this past weekend and trial fit a gauge
identical in size to the others in my McNeil instrument panel, I found they
were slightly too large in diameter to fit. Now I won't be able to have
gauges matching the instrument panel in the under dash panel.
Now I'm back to square one as far as additional gauges I want, is concerned.
I have no reason to lower my steering column. It's very comfortable as is.

Hi Paul
Do you think we need to balance these panels with the same things on either
side of center ?? If you look at the two pictures I have of these on my web
page (projects) I liked the one with mostly round gauges the best. The
little switches did not seem to look as balanced.
Did you lower your steering ? I have always wanted to lower mine about 2
inches, but I would have to cut some more out of the under-dash panel to do
this.
