We just got back from a extended tour after the Forest City Convention.
Saw three GMC's and our first FMC coming back via Texas.
When possible we try to drive off the main roads. Cutting across from
Shreveport to Nacogdoches on Tx315 (headed for Austin), we drove by a small
farm with a 23' GMC parked in front yard undergoing restoration. Talked to
the owner, Angelo, who said he had owned it since 1982, having bought it
from a Cadallic dealer in Longview. When my wife knocked on his door and
introduced herself, pointing out our Royale parked on the shoulder of the
road, his first words were, "It's not for sale." : ) He had never belonged
to any GMC club or attended any rally. I didn't get the TZE for Dave, I'll
see about it next Spring unless someone in the area wants to drive by. It's
about 10 miles east of Mount Enterprise on 315, on your left if you're
headed East.
We stopped at the Rayne RV Park planning to spend the night there to see
what the area was like. : ) Sigh....it's fields next to the Rayne
(pronounced "RAIN" according to the young lady at the gas station) Civic
Center with poles for electric. We spent the night at the KOA just West of
Lafayette in Scott, LA. Very nice.
Out of LA, We drove mostly on US 11 which parallels the Interstates in
MS, Al, and Tn. We LIKE going through the small towns.
Met Greg Beckett and two friends in his Palm Beach at the Meridian East
KOA in Mississippi. They were on their way from Orange, TX, to the Talledaga
(sp?) races in AL. I gave him Dave's e-mail address to send his GMC info if
he wanted and the applicable WEB sites info. He also had never joined any
club or attended any rally. He may make the Rayne convention.
We met James and Pat Hare from Pasadena, TX, driving a 1973 FMC and Fred
and Linda Westergren from Weimar, TX, driving a GMC at the Lookout Mountain
KOA near Chattanooga (KOA's actually in GA). They were traveling together.
Gave them the same information. Hope to see them in Rayne. The rear-engined
FMC looked just off the showroom floor. Really liked the driver's door.
There is obviously a lot of GMCs out there that are not in Dave's
register.
BTW don't miss "Rock City" if you are near Chattanooga.
Finally home after 4235 miles (no problems) and with a stack of GMC projects
collected at the convention.
