I'm confused(not a new experience) - while my timing marks are difficult
to see, I definitely didn't need to lay on my back. I chalked both the
harmonic balancer and timing scale, laid my "bridge" boards across the
driver's side of the engine compartment and was able to shine my timing
light through a narrow slot between the belts and hoses.

Still confused - my understanding is that you're setting the "initial"
advance and you don't want any vacuum at this point. I disconnect and plug
the distributor vacuum line.
