As I was following the list re final drive fluids and servicing, etc. this
nasty feeling of "oops" started to creep over me and finally covered me
totally.

I can't recall ever servicing the final drive on my rig. There, I've said it
and have slapped both hands a'plenty so no more slapping is necessary :-)

Past is past and forward we go.
My plan is to have full bottle of Scotch nearby as I take the cover off.
Being the forever optimist I want to make sure I have the right pieces and
fluid, just in case there's still more oil than shavings making just a
change of fluid feasable.

The parts breakdown in the book seems a little vague to me as it seems to
list a cover kit but not realy the gasket by itself.
Am I correct interpreting that the gasket pn# is 409729 and SAE80W Synthetic
Gear Oil is the way to go?

What else should I be looking for in particular other than metal in the oil.
No noises or anything like that that's causing the sudden desire to change
the oil, just guilty conscience.

Thanks to the list my rig will get better care in future [g]

I have two different part numbers for the final drive gasket.

1. cinnabar says it is 231285 and to make sure that the vent hole remains
open when you install.

2. GMC international says Felpro RDS-55034 or victor P28883
