Don't leave a whole bunch of money to your kids. Do them a huge favor, and
let them experience difficulties in life that only can be overcome by
diligence and effort. They will be way better citizens, that have a sense
of self reliance, instead of an attitude of dependence upon others to
support them.
Insist that public resources be properly managed to maintain
infrastructure like streets, bridges, parks, campgrounds, etc. The less
that governments manage our private lives, the better off we will all be.
Insist that low cost fuels be available so that we can all enjoy the
freedoms of travel and enjoy the great benefits of camping with our GMC's.

Now that we are both in our (healthy) 80's, we've decided to hell with conserving money. We've done it out whole lives and now are going to spend it. All the 6 kids are doing well and need nothing. We've no less well off relatives. We've already started with our GMC that requires some work (new Alcoas and tires!) and soon a new final drive and Lenzi front assemblies. It will be fun!!

After the kids left and I was no longer fronting education and other related expenses, I put a concerted effort into building a retirement nest egg.
I wanted land, but you can't buy a little at a time. Bonds should be safe. Both Corporate and municipal were only some hedges against inflation.
But recently several cities have gone bust. Corporate bonds on the other hand have always been legally treated as real property. So, it was as
though I had purchased a piece of a building or a large stamping press. This means that even if the selected corporation went with either Chapter 7
or 11, I would still be able to recover a large portion of the principle.
This plan meant that there would be no big expensive toys and vacations would mean mostly visiting parents and friends. We lived this way for 28
years all this for the promise of a comfortable retirement.
Please note: The following is not a political rant. It is facts and these are easily confirmed if you care to do so.
Then these large corporations asked the administration to cosign a loan to get them through the tough time (the actual cause of this is
controversial.) The administration agreed, but only if the could take control of said corporations. This was agreed. The larger of these was not
about to go bankrupt by any stretch. The administration's people now on the board forced it. All the stock holders lost everything, but the bond
holders (like me) thought we could rest on the existing laws. Silly people we were, for the administration people to take all control away from the
investors, they just abrogated (remember that word) the existing laws. They could not just take the bonds (that would have been unconstitutional -
4th amendment), so a plan was made to "buy" these bonds from the holders at a decreased value (05%). So, this investment is not completely gone.
The plan administrator wrote us holders a lovely letter. By his best guess, it would cost the plan, after jumping through the flaming hoops the
administration had set in the only path, about .03/1$ to recover that. As that would not clear enough to pay his phone bill, he just asked that we
not file a suit against his office for the loss. He did provide all the information needed to write this off if one had some gains or income to write
it off against. (I did not.) It was a little late for me to restart working on retirement for another 20~30 years.
There were still other investments and pensions, so we are not starving by any means, but we have to be very careful of how and where we do spend what
we have. This is not why we are not making it to Patterson. That is because I have gotten too old to work as fast as I used to, so the winter work
for Chaumière will not be complete before the required departure date. The 4$ gas would be an issue as it would be over 1k$us just in fuel cost.
But we would just cut some of the other excursions of the season to accommodate that. We do have plans to make Lebanon this fall. I should be done
with the "winter work" by then.

Matt, I took a different direction. I know little or nothing about finance, so when I got a piece of change, I paid off the mortgage. Some years
later I got another piece of change and bought the house our kid was living in and renting. As long as I make the taxes, both are secure. A couple
of employers were quite successful, and in each instance I ended up with a piece of that. Not great, but the difference in existing and living.
Probably the best investment I made was time in the military - mostly reserve - which picks up our health costs at a point where they can be
substantial. (over three years the rack rate for a new knee and a pacemaker was a bit over $200K, cost to us $0) If it keeps going like it is, the MRD
for the year is going to get us to England, she wants to see the Keeper of the Ravens.

I learned from a good friend what NOT TO DO. I have a good friend named
Smith. No, really that is his last name. He had a successful office supply
store. Lots of commercial accounts in the Capitol city of Salem. Government
agencies, etc. Then came Office Depot and others. He saw the handwriting on
the wall, and sold his still viable business for a whole bunch of money. He
took that large sum of money and paid off his substantial home mortgage.
That was a smart move. Most of the remainder was burning a hole in his
pocket, so he invested it, along with a whole bunch of others, in a
retirement village. Real upscale deal, assisted living, advanced and
perpetual care, the whole ball of wax. The place filled up almost
immediately, and provided a substantial return to the investment group.
That worked out so well, that the group hired a management staff to build
more of those retirement villages in several states. Managers name was
Jones. Glib of tongue and so crooked that his shadow was twisted. He talked
the group into borrowing against the equity of the successful village to
avoid borrowing from lending agencies. All was good until it wasn't.
Management company filed for Chapter 11 or 13, Smith wasn't sure which, but
that froze all of their assets. Smith and his fellow investors got royally
screwed. All said and done, they realized about $.05 on the dollar of their
initial investments. Didn't leave him homeless, but darned near. Left him
with no retirement except for his substantial home and large collection of
exotic cars. He started by selling off his cars, one at a time for money to
live on. Today, he lives on the modest amount that his fancy home and car
collection brought. Not a wealthy man any more. Sad story. But, I learned a
bunch from him. "DON'T NEVER TRUST ANYONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU, BUT THE GUY
YOU SEE IN THE MIRROR". Sad deal, but true.

My wife quit smoking many years ago but sagely put her “cigarette money” into stock and mutual funds. All these years and she’s had the mindset to invest in the S&P 500 or other major low cost funds. It will allow us to retire comfortably but not lavishly.
That coupled with the only thing W2 wage earners have - the 401k will keep us from being a burden on on our daughter or y’all (society).
Marry up. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

My wife quit smoking many years ago but sagely put her “cigarette money” into stock and mutual funds. All these years and she’s had the mindset to invest in the S&P 500 or other major low cost funds. It will allow us to retire comfortably but not lavishly.
That coupled with the only thing W2 wage earners have - the 401k will keep us from being a burden on on our daughter or y’all (society).

I know a couple who inherited a large sum of money from her father, who
owned a chain of pharmacies. When he passed away, they inherited most of
it. She sits down at a computer and spends at least the amount of time that
the New York Stock Exchange is in session, every day. She buys and sells
stocks, no broker involved. It has turned into a compulsive behavior with
her. They used to downhill ski, and in the summer they had power boats and
visited many lakes, fishing and swimming and water skiing. Since they
inherited the money, that has absolutely consumed their lives. Sad deal,
really. If that is what wealth does for you, I will pass on it. I have a
retirement income from my career at the Department of Corrections, where I
qualified under police and firefighter contribution rates. Nine years in
the Military contributed a chunk into my Social Security, and the flower
shop that my wife Mary and I owned sold, as well as a life insurance policy
on Mary contributed to my assets. So Judy and I are comfortably retired.
But not frivolous with what we have. If we cannot pay for it, we do not buy
it. No debts except for the remainder of my home mortgage. Worked many
years for this, and we thank our Creator for every morning we can open our
eyes and put our feet on the floor. Love our times in the GMC. We can
afford the fuel costs. Many are not so fortunate. So we feel blessed.

Sure did the same as an FAA radio tech. They would match a maximum
of 5% and the last five years I was putting in 20% of my gross pay.

Susquehanna -Pfaltzgraff for whom I worked for some several years (yes, the fine china folks - they had radio stations as well) initially had a formal
pension plan. Pays me a couple hundred a month. They morphed it into a 401K plan, their match ran 6 to 10% depending the year and how well we did
last year. The kids working there never used it, which was beyond me. They're gonna GIVE you more money and you don't want it? I took ever bit I
could get. Paid off, too.

Anyhow, I turned the FAA down because I was in a Guard unit and they wouldn't give a Certificate of Availability and my draft board would salivate.
So I went into broadcast engineering instead.
After reading a couple of your experiences, I'm glad I just stuffed the retirement loot in a couple of funds. The pros are/were way better than me at
investing. True the up isn't as great, but neither was the down. Went down 9 - 10% in 2008 - 9, recovered it by 2012, up nicely per year since.

I've always had a low budget mindset, and fortunately my wife shares this trait with me. Our newest vehicle is the 2003 Tracker we tow behind the
GMC, We live in a $800,000.00 home, but only because I spent every evening and weekend building it myself. Still, spending this much on gasoline for
a trip is hard for us, even though our financial advisor says we have nothing to worry about at this point.
We feel that doing the things we want and have saved for is important enough to just suck it up, get over the low budget mindset, and go for it.
Hopefully it will all work out and we will stay on the right trajectory.

60 years ago I learned in Economics 101 ( I have a Masters in Economics) that the effort to accumulate money was a waste of time and effort, UNLESS your goal was to reinvest to make more money, and/or to spend the money on items and events that pleased you. When I retired in 2000, I moved to a small, wealthy town with excellent health care facilities and bought a derelict stone house. Over the next 20 years I rebuilt the house from scratch, and only took on consulting jobs that interested me. (In my working life I had been an employee, a public servant and business owner. The business being a self built consulting company working over most of western Canada and the US west coast.) Last year I sold the stone house for many more times than I had paid for it and moved into a luxury 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom garden apartment.
Then bought a GMC and am rebuilding it to travel. I've added considerably to my art and coin collection and am planning on travelling the world (when I'm not in my GMC). My ultimate goal is to leave this world broke with a huge smile on my face. My four kids, grand and great grand kids are all doing very well and don't need anything from me.
My message? What's the point of dying with a sock full of cash in the bank? Don't just accumulate money, nor live such a frugal life style that you will be saying on your death bed, "I wish I had....."

Out here in CA, gas has always been expensive especially on the coast where I live. $5.78 for the low octane and $6.01 for middle grade @ Shell and
the price just gets worse the closer you get to highway interchanges.
