I want to do a filter/oil change on my transmission. I want to have a
"bung" welded on for a future trans. temp. sending unit. I want to pick
up a second trans. pan so I can modify it for an immediate swap.

I have two questions...

- - Is the TH 425 pan the same as the TH 400 pan? It would be easier to
find.
- - Where in the pan would be the best place to place the sender so it
does not interfere or contact the inner parts? Front, rear etc.

You may want to think about putting it in the oil cooler line that exits
the transmission (inboard line). I used a 1/4" brass nipple and a brass
'T'. I cleaned the area (with WD-40) then removed my oil line from the
existing brass fitting on the side of the transmission housing. I
removed the fitting and installed the brass nipple and brass 'T'. Then
I attached the original fitting to one end of the 'T' and the temp
sender to the other end of the 'T'. The only hard part was making a
couple small bends in the steel oil cooler line so it would align
properly. Its hard to get good leverage down there.

I think this location will give you the best temperature indication of
the inner workings of the trans.

The temps I am reading are about 175 on flat roads and 200 on grades. I
was going about 60-65mph. The outside temps where in the 80-100 degree
range. Keep in mind that I am running the 455 with a 160 degree
thermostat. I think the lower engine temp keeps the trans temp a bit
lower too.
