Pete Faxon here, with a vapor lock problem. Any input would be appreciated.
Our 74 Glacier is giving us fits on the road. It runs normally for about an
hour and then begins to mis fire and lose power on even slight hills.
Dropping down to second gear with light throttle lasts for a time but then
I must drop it into low gear to keep it moving. Finally it just stops.
After a while it will restart and run normally (with light throttle) for a
while and then the same routine of dropping to second, then first, then
stall. This is a 455 Olds engine with the original Quad four Carb. It has a
second fuel pump at the gas tank(s) and an after market in line filter
about 2 ft. from the carb. On the previous trip to about the same location
we had the same problem. At that time the pre filter and the carb filter
were clogged with dirt and rust. New filters and a new fuel line were
installed. At a midpoint on the current trip we were experiencing the same
problem as before, and the pre-filter was totally clear. But still having
the same problem. I have not checked the pressure from the auxiliary pump,
and it was suggested that this pump may be over pressuring the sistem
beyond the seven pound designed carb and creating the vapor lock in the
manifold. It may also be clogged up. As suggested, we poured ice cubes and
cold water around the manifold to dispurse the vapor. It got us un the road
for a while. But only for a while. We limped home. It took about five and a
half hours to make a three and a half hour trip.
Any ideas? Thanks from Pete and Jeanne in California
