I have never pulled a transmission and NOT found the sludge you
describe. Nearly all of that is clutch debris. Since that is the
source of most of the friction, that is the source of most of the wear.
That smooth transition from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is responsible for
a lot of the clucth wear in an automatic. Some also comes from the
thrust bushing in the rear of the case. Shift improver kits eliminate a
lot of this.
If the transmission has been performing well, clean the pan, install a
new filter, button it up, fill it up and enjoy.
I bet next time you'll find less when you service the tranny. Get a
good cooler!
