Transmission wear

I have never pulled a transmission and NOT found the sludge you
describe. Nearly all of that is clutch debris. Since that is the
source of most of the friction, that is the source of most of the wear.
That smooth transition from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is responsible for
a lot of the clucth wear in an automatic. Some also comes from the
thrust bushing in the rear of the case. Shift improver kits eliminate a
lot of this.
If the transmission has been performing well, clean the pan, install a
new filter, button it up, fill it up and enjoy.
I bet next time you'll find less when you service the tranny. Get a
good cooler!
Hope this eases the worry.

Clarification Needed/Confusion on my part?

Am I reading correctly that some have put Mobil-1 Engine Oil in their tranny's? Or is it Mobil-1 Tranny fluid.
When I first read the post's about the mechanics recommending putting Mobil-1 in, I AssUMed that they were talking about Mobil-1 Engine Oil. Can/Should we do this?? Or should it only be Mobil-1 Tranny fluid.
IMHO, I dont think we can/should put in engine oil in tranny. (Not pointing fingures here, just making sure or fact/myth) (I.E. Military term most know, CYA factor).
Thankx

Transmission fluid is designed to be both a hydraulic fluid as well
as a lubricating fluid. It has a viscosity that is designed for the
transmission. The fluid also has friction modifiers so that the
clutches and bands grip properly and yet still allow the bearings and
other parts to be properly lubricated. Although some have reported
on this net about putting motor oil into the tranny, it definitely
doesn't have the properties that transmission fluid has. I would
personally only use transmission fluid. Some people also swear about
putting WD-40 on their joints for arthritis but I haven't tried this
either!

CB,
You are reading correctly. I have a rebuilder that recommends it. It is in
my old transmission. We'll see what happens. However, Mobil makes a good
synthetic transmission oil and I don't know of anyone having trouble with
regular tranny fluid either so I can't give you a rational reason for trying
it. Rumors are that it is less apt to foam and will stand higher
temperatures. Others think it may have the wrong properties. Watch the net
and I'll let everyone know if it goes bad.

My recommendation would be to use Mobil Synthetic ATF.
