Transmission Vent

Wes Caughlan had an article and inexpensive solution for the Trans Vent
overflow problem in the June '98 issue of GMC News. He used 38" 3/8 fuel
line hose, GM PCV hose # 25508425 (for elbows) and vent cap #8460496. Use
one of the elbows to attach to vent of transmission, connect with short
length of 3/8 copper tube to 3/8 fuel line hose run into aluminum u channel
under floor attach vent cap on end. This places the 'vent' out of harms way.
This is on my Spring "to do" list, looks to be a solution.

I've realy hit a block of blindness (or stupidity), or I just have to much
junk (good junk :-) in the engine compartment.

I've been unable to locate just where the Tranny vents to the outside world.

I have a slight overfill condition that the Tranny Shop said is nothing to
worry about (ecept that it vents when the tranny fluid gets warmish (150-180
at the pan) and I'm going up a steep hill (2nd gear), i.e. I don't care what
they say... I don't like it.

I'd sure like to find that little sucker so that I can improve the where it
vents to.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

I know this works but it seems like such a Rube Goldberg solution. When
my trans was burping (sometimes it even belched) out the vent, Chuck
Stoddard told me to drill a couple of holes in the fill end of my forward
mounted dip stick. Hasn't happened since.

I guess I missed something here again. How, Where do you get the GM C News.

What does this tube do for the transmission? Is it important?
So far I have not lost any fluids. chuck

I tried to install the hose per instructions, but could not get the hose over
the vent tube (must remove vent cap first) becuase it is located behind the
engine cover opening. I skinned my knuckles badly before giving up. Has any
one successfully installed the vent hose while tranny still in the coach??

Vent located top of tranny housing just BEHIND the opening to the engine. You
can feel for it as it has a loose fitting metal cap that covers the short
vertical vent pipe. Cover can be pried off with a screwdriver but may need to
keep to replace as I could not install the vent hose by hand due to lack of
clearance.

It is really great to be able to provide some info to you after all the help
you have been to all of us.

Thanks to all for the hints. As you say/imply, now that I've found it I'm
too chicken to do anything about it as all I can do is feel it.

Postponed for another day [g]. Closed the lid today, getting ready for a
friday night departure.

It's just sooooo nice to be able to ask a question and get an answer that
one can trust or at least use in one's own equation with confidence.

Cheers

We're all in this together... which adds to the fun and productivity, or
rather success to get something else under control.

Heinz,

I would suggest removing the front driver's side wheel and wheel well. It
really is not that difficult to get the wheel well out if you are careful,
and it makes access much better. When the wheel well is out, you can
actually see the vent and what you are doing instead of just feeling it.

Thanks for the reminder Gene. I hadn't paid attention earlier as to where
the vacuum pump goes even though it's on my mental project list. Now I'll be
sure to combine the 2 as you suggest.
