Are you sure it was not your fan engaging? it makes a lot of noise when it
engages to cool down the engine.

Derek,

I think Frank is right. Last summer I was on the freeway and heard a
loud roar, which I presumed was the transmission. Stopped and checked
fluid; level was fine. Like yours, my tranny was shifting OK so I
nervously continued on. Took it to Buskirk's, installed new fan clutch,
uninstalled $127.71 plus labor from my wallet, problem solved. You
mentioned slippage, that could indicate a different problem. But if,
hopefully, it was just the fan clutch the GMC gods let you off easy.

Derek:

Are sure that you are not hearing your water pump fan go into high speed
making you believe that the engine is racing? The fan is temp regulated
and will speed up when it gets into it's temp range. My $.02

Derek,
>From reviewing the thread, it sounds like you have plenty of sound advice.

I would add that if the fan sound troubles you, do not purchace a heavy
duty (90%) fan clutch as a replacement. The OEM is a 75% rotation clutch
which seems to do a fine job without the annoying "wer" sound when it kicks
in.

If you need the part #'s, give me a call at work Friday (1-877-275-4462)

Good luck,
