There is an update on my transmission in the 26'

Recap: Spills fluid when hot, shifts nicely when cold or hot, not
overfilled.

First garage didn't have time nor space.

2nd garage now finally (after about 7 month, said: We can do it: 5800USD

A replacement trans from Applied GMC is 1600USD plus shipping, according
to Jim H it 6 hours is the time it takes on a brand new GMC to replace
the trans, 45 minutes is the time, according to legend, it takes Manny
to replace it.

Anyone wants to fix my transmission in Charlottesville, VA for 2000USD?!

I forgot: My reasoning behind this: A rebuild kit is about 150USD, and
the Patterson rally has been cancelled, so someone might want to find
something else to do with their time :-D

Since you first posted about your problem I had my trans go out on the return trip from the Mansfield rally. My daughter and I towed it home about 63
miles with my PU truck at about 50 - 55 mph. The biggest problem was moving it backwards and parking it in my hangar.

My daughter and her boyfriend R and Red it along with the final drive and both axles. I repacked the CV joints, repacked the front wheel bearings,
and replaced some seals in the final drive. None of this do you need to do.

I took the trans to Blaine Merrell's where Blaine, Diane, and I removed every part of the trans. The rebuild consisted of replacing one clutch hub
that was stripped out and then we reassembled it. I have never had a GMC trans apart but it was not difficult under Blaine and Diane's supervision
and help.

Your's is running, mine was broken. I am suggesting that you may have only a minor problem. Blowing fluid usually is a problem of over heating trans
fluid or sucking air into the pick up tube in the pan. Before I made the decision to R and R it, I would try to fix it in place.

I would drop the pan and replace the filter looking very carefully for a possible air leak where the filter plugs in. It is a friction fit and I
would put two rings or the replacement filter. Then refill with new fluid (about 5 quarts). Filter will cost you about $30.00. Trans fluid around 20
to 25 unless you choose full synthetic.

The next thing I would be looking for is a partial blockage in the trans cooler and the lines going to the cooler. I would remove both lines at the
trans and blow low pressure shop air through them to see if they are indeed open. Blow air through them in both directions to make sure they are
really open.

An over full or low trans fluid level can also cause this. Start the engine to allow the torque converter to fill. Turn the engine off and
IMMEDIATELY pull the modulator (one bolt). if fluid comes out then you are over full. If fluid does not come out, then add fluid until it just
starts to come out of the hole. Install the modulator and check the level on the stick. Fluid at the bottom of the modulator hole is the full point.
Many sticks have been found to be mis-calibrated.

If the fluid is very old you might just try to change it. When I was a kid, my scout master was driving his car to upper Wisconsin with us in it. We
stopped at a toll booth and could not get going again. It was blowing fluid out of the trans. He said :"damn, I knew I should have changed that
fluid". He was a Phd chemist that worked for what is now BP. He explained that there is an anti-foam agent in trans fluid that wears out and causes
this foaming.

We sat there for about 45 minutes and then drove away. We drove to an auto parts store and he bought one quart of trans fluid and something else that
I did not see or at least don't remember. He put both in the trans and we drove off to Northern Wisconsin. A week later we drove home again to
Indiana with no more problems.
A fluid change might be in order for yours.

If you have done all of the above and it does not fix it, then you are past my knowledge level. You need to talk to someone else.

That is the kit all use and is not worth the time to put it in.
Our Manny Trans has so much more HD components and special parts that
others cannot match.
Plus we supply it with a rebuilt Allyson type HD Torque converter others do
not supply and eats up you cheap built trans.
Your choice.

I highly recommend the Mityvac 7201 fluid extraction tool. You can easily and cleanly suck the pan dry through the dipstick tube. Then drop pan
without a red shower. Could be as simple as a bad filter O ring causing aeration. You say it doesn't happen immediately. It takes a bit of time to
have the pump "Vitamix" the fluid into a froth, taking up many times it's liquid volume due to trapped air micro bubbles. Then thar she blows. I
would check this simple thing before pulling trans.

That is a good way to avoid the Shower.
I also prefer to drop the pan only to examine is there are metal particles
at the bottom.
That can indicate a possible problem before a major trip.

Thanks Jim. Seems to me that it doesn't make sense to ship back the old
trans to you, does it?

So the total for me for a replacement trans will be

1598 trans
350 core
450 shipping

puhh - gotta think about this. Sure is a lot of money. Will check what
the local garage wants for the trans removal and install, or do you
happen to have a reliable installer in the Charlottesville,VA area?

After some contemplating and discussion with my CFO, we will postpone
the decision, due to the current travel ban from your President, and the
uncertainty when the travel regulations will be normalized again.

I have heard those 30 days too often...

But there is another thing: We originally bought the US coach to have
two vacations with our kids, to show the some of the east coast and some
of the west coast. To the date, have had three wonderful vacations with
it, one cancelled vacation due to the transmission, and now the question
that comes up is: Do we really want to invest 3000+ USD to fix it, when
we have already completed the main reasons for buying it in the first
place.

Are there still things we want to see: You bet. But I am not very
motivated at the moment to spend this amount of money when I don't know,
when I will utilize the coach again.

So to sum it up: your Presidents decision gave us a nice excuse, but we
have a lot of things to think about. I would LOVE to have a
knowledgeable person remove the trans and r'n'r the trans together with
me, when the time comes to be able to return to the States. But it
seems nobody is taking the bait, and Ken Frey just replied that he is
finally shutting down his shop. Good for him, not good for me, or other
people in the VA,PA,NY,NJ area

Dripping a trans on the coach is easy, but install it is very tricky if you
do not know what not to do and what to do.
I learned lot of the procedures and tricks from sharp GMC guys back in 1980.
I assist those that call me and the rest that think the operation is basic,
I say ; it will take you more time to do .

I am sure of that. It is just that I like to learn things, just as much
as I like to coach people with the stuff I know (computers).

To me, it is not wasted time, but time invested in learning.
