Transmission govenor

I removed a governor from a 1972 Tornado transmission today and the gear set that the speed-o cable threads on has a metal gear. I had to replace
this gear a few months back in my 76 PalmBeach due to a broken tooth on a plastic gear.
Are the metal gears comparable to the plastic ones.
Should I keep the governor and metal gear out of the 72 as a set?

Not sure I'd use the metal gear Bruce. I think the plastic gear would more likely ack as a fuse if your speedo or cable locked up. If you had the
metal gear chances are you'd take out the gear in the trans which would be a real problem. Just my way of thinking, Hal

Agree with Hal. Fusible link. GM does stuff for reasons that at first glance may not be apparent until you see the whole picture.

Third opinion, take it for what is worth. It is a fuse/safety item as has been stated by Hal and John L. You should get a repair kit and put it in your coach as a back up for when you might actually need it if not never. I have friends that have had a repair setup in their coaches for 20 years and never used them. Others may have experienced other results.

I use to tease Dan Greg about all of the stuff he carried. After he blew his second engine I told him to carry a spare engine and he would never have
to worry about loosing another engine again.

It really seams like it, but, it seems to me that Murphy's law says
something like " If you carry a spare widget, that part will never fail."
I used to try to carry one of everything, but my coach wouldn't get out of
it's own way. So, I went about thining the herd, giving more thought to
stuff like distributors, and starters, and drive axles, and rear wheel
bearing sets, the list goes on and on.
These days, a good spare tire, jack hook, 10 ton hydraulic jack,
alternator, fuel pump, light bulbs, fuses, just stuff that has proven
failure records.
My wife carrie's a cell phone, credit card, AAA membership card.
That's it. As Gene Fisher says, drive your best parts.
