Trans trouble on the road????

That's is something I want to do. Just have to find a place to do it.

Question - If the modulator is passing oil to the manifold does it still operate correctly?

Steve, if the diaphragm is ruptured, and transmission fluid is being
transferred to the engine, then some performance issues SHOULD be apparent.
If it is intact, performances should be closer to normal. But, you already
told us that it did not appear to be leaking at the juncture. Pull the
vacuum hose off at the intake end and check it for fluid. I suspect issues
where the dipstick tube exits the final drive, or the speedometer drive
itself.

I agree with Jim's response but..... I was trying to get you to remove the modulator to verify that the trans fluid level is correct. So I figured
that while you have the hose off you might as well check it for fluid. I doubt that the modulator is leaking but check it while you are there.
Usually a leaking modulator causes shifting problems.

I hadn't given the speedo drive any thought. I'm so sure the leak is coming out the vent I've neglected a some things.

I'll pull the vac line off on top of the engine an see if it is oily. Wouldn't I see smoke out the exhaust if I was sucking ATF into the manifold.
Also take a good look at the governor. That would be too easy. I have a spare governor.

Just curious, when you pull the modulator do you do it with the engine
running or shut off after things have heated up and the torque
converter is full.

I really feel Steve's woes as I spent the last 2 years dealing with
the same stress. It's not fun at all. I'm praying he finds an easy
fix.

The open hole is just a spilway to correctly scribe the stick. Liquids seek their own level is all. The torque converter info is irrelevant. You just
are getting liquid level same as bottom of hole to scribe stick engine off. THEN you put back together and run in park and level drops as running and
you fill to the new scribe level. When you first pull the modulator expect some overspill even if level was actually correct as engine is off and
fluid settled back to pan. Remember fluid level on stick can only be checked engine running in park.
