Steve I know you live in the same general vacinity, if possible a GMC
netter
could see if this is a viable entity perhaps we can find a source for
less
expensive transmission components.

Chuck,
I don't live very close to Van Nuys, but closer than you I guess.
I bought a Caddy 500 inch motor & trans & final drive yesterday. I
plan on separating the trans & taking it to the shop that has done all
my trannys for the past 13 years. The owner used to work with Art Carr,
who, IMHO was and still is the tranny Guru of the world. Anyway, it's
not a project that's on the front burner right now as I have to finish
my front end upgrades today in preparation for a 6-wheel alignment sked
for Thurs. Then I have to service the CV joints (can someone tell me if
they can be pulled without removing the hubs), then run the propane line
for my new refer, then maybe the trans. Being 20 + miles from where I
keep the GMC and only having 2 days a week to work on it is a bummer.
Enough whining!
Most of the local shops only get a $150 core charge. The first chance
I get I'll find out what all upgrades are available for the TH425 and
what my price would be. BTW, I was able to come up with the Caddy
(TH425) trans for $125 & they threw in the engine & drive for another
$100 so I took it. Switch pitch units are considerably rarer so I see
why they cost more. Granted, they're nice, but good set of gears and a
stock converter will do just fine and get better mileage. I'm not
interested in beating someone up a hill in one of these things but I
would like to be able to keep them in sight.
I hope I'm the Steve you were referring to in your post.

Steve,

On separate occasions I removed the axles from both sides without pulling
the hubs or knuckles. After loosening the axle nut at the hubs along with
the 6 twelve-point bolts holding the axles to the final drive output shaft
flanges (wheel still on and on the ground) jack up the front end and remove
the wheels and twelve-point bolts. By pushing the axles up and to the side
you can pull the them out of the hub and drop them down underneath the
engine / final drive. I remember that on the right side it helped to take
off the shock absorber and raise the lower control arm and knuckle few
inches using a bottle jack so that the angle improved to let the axle come
out. I then took the axles to a CV rebuilding shop and let them do the
dirty work. Good luck with yours.
