Hi all.

Just finished up on oil/filter replace on tranny, Fin cleaning too. No
problem with filter fit, had a ATP B-40. Pan and all looked like it was
just replaced/cleaned, bright red fluid, very little dark residue took
half of a shop rag to wipe pan and all clean. No caking?/plugs or
anything in cooler/lines and as clear as can be. Wes Tach sender/gauge
checked out ok atleast up to 212deg. with water and ohmed at 2780
per WesTach, Darn nothings easy!! Removed my 16 tube cooler and left
3 tube in to compliment Rad. cooler. And will take for test drive to see
results.
Hopefully all will be better!!! If not, Guess I'll change my oil every
couple trips
till whats wrong shows itself, Because all looks/runs good now.
Except the 300deg. seen at peaks of hills, But my engine temps are great.

Hi Again,

Called Checkers auto parts, To see if I could do anything with my 16 tube
Maxikool tranny cooler, They said if I had my receipt and didn't like it,
Just bring it back and I get my money back. :-)>. Now thats nice. Waiting
for my test drive before deciding to return or not.

Ron & Gina: You might like to try the Shogun RV device for lowering
transmission temperatures. I recently purchased one for $75 but have not
installed it as yet. The device is a round piece of heavy gauge metal that
bolts between the engine and the torque converter. It has fins punched in
it which act as a fan to force air circulation around the converter. You
have to leave the inspection cover off in order to allow air to enter/exit.
Shogun maintains that it can lower the temperature by as much as 75
degrees. Apparently, the torque converter stays dust free due to the air
flow. I talked at length with the fellow who developed it. (Shogun sounds
like a one person company as he has been the one to answer the phone when I
call.) The company is noted for developing things like electric water pumps
for dragsters. I like the guy a lot. He sounds like a straight shooter and
is was quite willing to explain how he developed it. (He did a computer
simulation of the cyclone effect on a university high end computer.) He
said that he has made a number of sales to places such as the Atlanta
Police Department for their patrol cars, as well as for ambulances. I just
wish that other unnamed GMC supplies were as forthcoming about their
products. If you are interested I can get you the telephone number for
Shogun on my return (I'm in NYC for a few days) or you can call Summit
Racing and ask for the number (they used to carry the cooler). The only
drawback that I can see is the effort required to install it. Your coach
would be perfect for testing it as you have monitored the temperatures so
regularly. In fact, if you want to try it, I'll send you mine and you only
have to reimburse me for it if it actually works!

Hi Vic,

Can't seem to picture this cooler, Guess it just goes around bellhousing?
Air entering/exiting thur inspection cover. guess that gets air to the heat
source. And I get a free test drive, Guess I can't beat that. I ordered
Ragusa's
pan. And made some brackets to reinstall maxikool cooler in place of the
three tube cooler. And going to get another sender and switch to monitor pan
temps. If this works, I'm good. But if your cooler is a bolt-on, I'm willing
to run
the test!!!! And if my work doesn't bring temps down, And your cooler does
I'll
buy it. But might be alittle while due to Holidays and my bath module.
repair/fix,
which I still hope is easy, And my gas vapor leak/repair Let me know.

I would be very careful. If your gage is anywhere near accurate you may
have oil with a very short life. Check it for odor and color. I recall a
table that oil that treaches that temp has a life measured in hours
instead of years.

Hi Dave,

Yeah even after oil/filter change, air blew all lines and removed one of my
coolers, And reaching now, even insulated sender since it was about 3-4"
away from end of exhaust manifold. Tranny temps did drop about 20deg. but
still gets to about 280(outlet) Just before peak of hill (but she runs and
shifts so good). Fluid looks and smells good on dip stick. Waiting for the
Ragusa pan to install and switch to the Maxikool cooler, and I'll check
odor/color of fluid, But it was bright red with no odor during change 1350
miles ago. And I have been thinking, changing oil every trip would get old
real quick!! Part of reason for the pan purchase with its drain. And now
maybe the Vic option!!!!!!

Ron,

If your tranny oild has seen temps as high as 280-300f for more than
20-30 minutes and the color and oil look good then gage accuracy is
suspect.

Hi Dave,

Maybe for the total trip, The time above 275f was about 10-20min. I did ohm
the sender/gauge per WesTach which checked OK, And hot water test, which was
right on also. Think gauge still could be off at higher temps? WesTach said
to send back and they would check thur-out gauge range, But also said that
the test I did shows that the gauge/sender is OK.
