1978 Eleganza II:
In the receipts with my '78 coach was a warranty replacement of
the transmission with a new one by the dealer (no charge) at
about 18,000. Probably got warranty at 18,000 because owner at
that time was still the original GMC dealer. Coach had not yet
been titled in 1982.

Now at 76,000+ on coach (58,000 on that same tranny).

Had a problem with VERY hard shifting - would you believe it was
on the way to Alex Sirum's!!! When I got there Jeff replaced a
cracked vacuum line.

All is still well in paradise.

We tow 75% of time.

>Dave, Where did you buy the trans cooler

I got it at a local auto parts chain (Murrays). It was the largest one they
had, about 12" x 12". I mounted it to a couple angle brackets that I
attached to the front cross member, just behind the grill. I routed the
trans fluid from the trans to the new oil cooler and back into the radiator
mounted trans cooler (keeps the fluid from getting too cool).

>ENGINE OIL COOLER, which did you use?

No, I didn't install an engine oil cooler.

>Specific manufacturer/part number is
>good! :-)

I will look tonight and see if I can find the Mfg/PN info.

I have about 130,000 total miles on the tranny. Back at 50,000
the tranny was rebuilt. The previous owner had records that
indicated the owner previous to him had let the fluid get too
low, thus requiring a rebuilt.

I had a problem, that's caused me a great deal of grief. After
starting up for the first time in a day, I found that after backing
out of my driveway, the transmission would not go into drive.
Also, I could not go back into reverse. This always seemed to
happen when I would be in the middle of the street, with traffic
present. After a few minutes (seemed like hours) it would go
into drive and the rest of the day would be uneventful. My wife
always enjoyed these little episodes with my "toy".

I took it to Cinnabar and they fixed the problem. They said the tranny filter
(which was not genuine GM) was clogged and causing low oil pressure
upon startup. Apparently, after the oil heated up, there would be
adequate pressure. Anyway, since they said they fixed the problem, I have
not had it happen again. It's been a few weeks since the repair and about
800 miles. If they had not fixed the problem, it would have happened
many times by now.

Before I took it to Cinnabar I confirmed the tranny fluid level
was correct and I checked the vacuum lines to the vacuum modular.
I even checked the modulator out the way service manual suggested.
The previous owner claimed he had changed the filter and fluid
less then 10,000 miles before I bought it.

Wonder if this means I should only buy genuine GMC Motorhome transmission
filters?

Other then that, all seems well with my tranny.

Dave, Where did you buy the trans cooler and, if you also have the separate
ENGINE OIL COOLER, which did you use? Specific manufacturer/part number is
good! :-)
(OTHERS FEEL FREE TO WEIGH IN ON THIS ONE, OK? Looking for as much
up-to-date info as we can gather before making (or is that "taking"?)
another large cash dump.
Thanks

Dave, Is your unit fan cooled or does it rely only on ram air across the coil.

98000 Miles with regular service. Governor at 68k and 97K miles.
Ragusa pan at 70K and just change to Mobil 1 tranny fluid @ 97K. Just
installing external cooler with extra external filter along with
rerouting the lines from under the exhaust manifold on the drivers side.
Runs and shifts good, I-77 mountains didn't appear to cause any
problems on way to Myrtle Beach.

Tranny report correction... the 57,000 was from memory. I looked up the
Aamco receipt and it says 74,761. Cost was correct.

Its ram air cooled. I assumed that the trans would not be cranking out all
that much heat at slower speeds. Of course its pretty flat in these parts.
I am sure that, when going slowly up a steep grade, the use of a fan would
help. I installed the trans cooler mainly because I was planning on towing
a rather large boat a couple summers ago. Maybe this year I will add a
trans temp gauge and see what its really doing.
