Tranny governor removal

Evening all,

It's probably been hit on before, but all I can find is that the the left header has to removed to remove the governor. I looked under and noticed I
have a governor with the removable weight cover. Has anyone ever tried by removing the cover first getting more clearance and then see if the governor
will come out. The governor is the easy part, the oil tube through the header is the hard part. Can't hurt to ask. And I've got a header that isn't
leaking. In case your wondering, I've got a weird intermittent shift problem and all things point to a sticking valve or weep hole in governor.

The removable weight cover is a pretty rare option. I have manny headers and the same governor. But have not tried to remove the governor since I
went to headers.

I dont know how many removable governor covers ever got made and are out there. Maybe call wally and ask as I am sure he has headers and should know.

Nothing harmed by trying.

It will not give you enough clearance as the weights are below the cap.
Just loosen the collector 3 bolts then the header gaskets and spread it a
little and pull it out.

It's been many years since I had headers, but IIRC, the purpose of removing
the cover from the governor (which one did by grinding away the flange
where the top met the flat bottom) was to allow removal without disturbing
the headers. That small reduction in the overall length of the governor
supposedly allowed one to work it out of the transmission case. Nothing
lost by trying!

I can tell you that the time utilized in cutting the gov. Is not worth the
time.
If you spread the header as I mentioned is more pridictsle as more than
likely the header need the gasket replaced anyway.
If your time is not a concern, dig in on cutting the cover.

Well, if you cut the cover, how do you seal it back up?

Hi Skip,
If the removable cover works to get the governor out without detaching the headers, please let us know. If not, you don't have to remove the dipstick
tube to get the governor out. I replaced my governor two years ago. After loosening the header bolts, I supported the weight of the headers with an
bungee cord (or two) to a board across the engine access. Once the header bolts are removed, you can moved the headers up enough (you don't need very
much movement) to pull the governor without damaging the dipstick tube.

A new header gasket is a must.

PS. I should have taken more pictures.

Johnny,

When cutting the cap off of the governor, it's important to remove as
little metal from the crimped rim as possible so that there's a little
"shelf" left. That 1/8" or so wide shelf is covered with RTV when
re-installing the governor; the wire bail holds the cap down in the RTV as
it holds the governor in the transmission case.

It occurred to me later that someone might consider removing an un-modified
cap with the governor installed; I doubt that's possible -- certainly not
without damaging that sealant shelf. DON'T TRY! I cut mine apart on a
lathe.

There's another reason to remove that cap: Modifying the fly weights to
increase the shift point speeds. IIRC, Bill Bramlett's recommendation was
to drill 5 each 1/4" holes in each of the 2 weights. I never tried it, and
Manny adjusts the speeds in his transmissions differently.

I appreciate all the replies and thoughts and I was thinking like Johnny "how do you seal it back up?". It might be a couple of weeks till I get to
it. I still need to order a gear from Jim so I can change it while it's out. But I will let ya'll know when I find out.

I have a "Wally Anderson" governor. I was thinking his was the only one's that had a removable top. his is a bit fancier, and with the machining
he does, the cover is sealed with an O-ring.

what you might have could be some other backwoods situation. If you grind/cut the cover off like others said has been done by someone, somewhere.
I am not really sure how you would put it back together.
