"Dec. 30, 1999, 9:44PM Houston Chronicle - Area briefs - Crackdown
on trucks
The Houston Police Department issued 24 tickets and arrested seven
drivers during a crackdown on unsafe trucks Thursday.
The four-hour effort, carried out by HPD's truck enforcement unit near
the Houston Ship Channel bridge, also resulted in removal of 15 trucks
from the roadway. Sgt. C.J. Klausner, who heads the unit, said most of
the safety problems involved brakes. Eighty warnings for safety
violations were issued. About 150 driver's licenses were checked, and
at least half the truckers had driving while intoxicated arrests and
most of the remainder had other traffic violations, Klausner said. "It
was unbelievable, quite an education," he said.

PS: Actually, nationwide 18 wheelers are not the main problem...it
tends to be more regional truckers trying to skirt the regulations...
