Following up on my earlier post about towing, I would like to hear from those who have towed using a tow dolly. That would broaden the number of cars from which to choose to any front wheel drive unit, auto or manual trans. SHE continues to argue for an auto trans and I am hearing the dreaded, “at our ages” phrase more and more often! We always towed four down while full timing in the rolling condo so have no experience with tow dollies. From what I have read there is less drag with a tow dolly since nothing in the towed vehicle moves except the rear wheels. Have you found that to be the case WRT towing behind our GMCs? I have read many accounts about the pain a tow dolly is to live with, but others report they are not that much of a hassle since surge brakes can be built into the tow dolly you avoid the necessity to hook up some kind of an afterthought brake system in the towed vehicle.

The nice thing about a tow dolly is you can actually back up if you need to.

Tow dollies are not that much different from towing a trailer. You are not
going to want to back up more than a few feet with one. They do pose a
problem of "what do you do with the dolly when you are camped?" Many people
use them with few problems, though. I frequently tow a cargo trailer, and
have very few problems as well. You already have considerable experience
with tow behinds, so are aware of most of the tow bar issues. Surge brakes
on the dolly simplify hook ups. 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other, I guess.

We have a tow dolly from Acme Tow Dolly that we use to tow our 06 Civic Hybrid. It's great but be prepared to get on the ground to hook up the safety chains. Other than that, it's a piece of cake. I've watched people with tow bars and brake systems take just as long as I do with hooking up my car to the tow dolly. Granted they don't have to get on the ground to do anything.

That is also my thinking to maybe tow a FWD Kia Soul or (if I really want to splurge) one of the new Fiata 124s!

I've towed 4 down, dolly, open car hauler, and enclosed car hauler that had my 403 pulling a GVW of 21,000lbs. All have their ups, and downs. But with Linda's Uplander van. The dolly is my choice. Plus the hookup was faster then a bar. Then you can put anything on it with no modifications to the toad. On our trip of 3800 miles. We got 10.2 MPG average with the dolly. You can back them up. But you have to be on your toes.

As a tow dolly owner, I advise being careful in choosing what vehicle you're going to tow. I basically ruined the front bumper of my car (Chrysler Concorde) because it scraped on the tow dolly when I loaded and unloaded it. Check how steep the ramp of the dolly is. Your vehicle has to climb that ramp without anything catching on the tow dolly. SUVs are better because they have more ground clearance.
