Hello
To those who took the time to respond to my inquiry re:towns in
Arizona or New Mexico, I thank you.
Unfortunately, my filing system isn't what it should be this week,
and at present those messages are filed under'C' for Cyberspace.
In short, I'm looking for a small, quiet, community/town in the dead
center of nowhere, in either of those two states. The community/town
should be so remote that sunlight is pumped in and the inhabitants are
required to 'come out' to go hunting, if you get my drift. That's
correct, not a city :)
There is a catch. There should be a hospital in the vicinity, and it
should be a tolerant community...
because I would like to park my carcass there for a couple of months
next winter .....where should I be looking and why...
Any suggestions would be appreciated, and the comment 'stay home'
will be considered if there are sufficient
numbers :)
Now back to my filing improvement coarse..

Thank you

Without knowing what you mean by "vicinity" for a hospital and "tolerant" I
can offer one town that I know reasonably well and it surrounds: Socorro
New Mexico has a hospital. It's a relatively small town with a University
(only a few thousand students at most). Within half an hour is Magdalena
and the Cibola National Forest. Socorro is about 80 miles south of
Albuquerque. Silver City NM is also nice.

Can you be more specific?

Mike
I think I've been to exactly the town you're looking for! It's a small
town in southern New Mexico that was once famous for their Healing Hot
Spring Mineral Baths. In fact, I think it used to be named Hot Springs.
It was once (and may still be) a very big retirement town. It's on the Rio
Grande river and there's a nice manmade lake nearby called Elephant Butte
Resevoir. The town is called Truth or Consequences. It's about 65 miles
north of Las Cruces and about 165 miles south of Albuquerque. I sprained
my ankle while working there so know that they have got a good hospital. I
remember seeing several RV campgrounds along the river too.

I think if I was looking for what you're looking for, that's where I'd go.

Henry,
I appreciate your reply. I'll be heading for the maps in a few
minutes! I'm just looking for a resting spot where I can get "lazy"
for 8-10 weeks in the middle of a ten month trip, we're planning.
"Vicinity" I guess, means within 15 to 30 minutes of a
hospital....and no, I'm not planning to 'Buy the Farm' while I'm there-
just trying to cover some bases. 'Tolerent' means the locals would
have to put up with stupid comments, poor jokes, and and a very
lethargic man underfoot. His co-pilot fortunately has much more to
offer.
Thanks for the input.
I'll be keeping you informed.

I may have missed the time of year that you have in mind. Socorro has a KOA
(I know...) on the southern outskirts of town. I'm not certain of what else
they have now.

Someone else mentioned Truth or Consequences NM. Also a nice little town.

Those parts of NM can get a bit warm in the summer.

For a larger city area, Cornado State Park outside ALbuquerque used to have
30 day camping permits.

Good luck,

Henry
PS if you REALLY want to be in the boonies try the fromer BLM land in Magdalena

Sorry to hear that. It was a nice little campground. My wife and I camped
there several times when I was in grad school in Socorro.

I am certain that many towns within New Mexico meet or exceed your
requirements. I don't know if I can offer concrete localities, but
within New Mexico are lots of small towns, some with heavy artists and
some with hispanics. The towns have all unique characteristics, and
those with Indian roots offer different experiences. Hope that helps,
but if you will email me directly, we can work on satisfying your
questions.
