I am looking at removeing the front subframe on my two spare Transmodes.
Having talked to a number of people this seems to be a good way to go to
get at everything in the front end out in the open for a cleaning,
examination and rebuild.

Has any one removed the torsion bars and what special tools are required
if any? I know about marking them for putting them back in correctly
etc. but the manual lists a GM tool for removal and installation. Can
it be done with out it or is there a common tool avaiable from a NAPA,
SnapOn etc to do the job.

Here is what I sent earlier on the subject:

Fred:

Try reaching Kent-Moore at 800-328-6657 and save a nickel. Also K-M's
web address is http://www.oetteg.com which you can use to inquire.

Have you by chance asked Jean Henderson or C O Lewis your question? You
might also try Dick Crawford here in Vicksburg MI, 616-649-1967.

Subject: GMC: Tool for Adjusting Torsion Bars

I need a tool to adjust the torsion bars. The bars on my '78 Royale need
adjusting as the front ride height is about 2" lower than spec. The
service manual illustrates a convenient and safe tool for that purpose,
no. J 2251702. It is probably a Kent Moore tool.

Cinnabar does not sell or rent that tool. They referred me to Kent
Moore Tools at 810 574 2332. I have not yet called Kent Moore.

Has anyone devised or bought a safe alternate to the Kent Moore tool?
If so, please advise... I considered improvising with a gear puller but
discarded that idea for safety reasons.

I prefer to perform the adjustment with bars loaded as described in the
manual. I am aware that some owners relax the bars as much as possible
by lifting at the front crossbar and then torquing the adjusting bolt.
If the bolt threads do not strip, the vehicle may be have to be lowered
and raised several times before the correct ride height is obtained.

Marcus,

You must relieve the preload from the torsion bar to get it out, DO NOT
try to back out the adj. bolt with before you relieve the pressure!!
You run a real risk of striping out the bolt and/or the adj. cam. The
tool can be found in a kent-Moore tool catalog as a torsion bar preload
setting tool. I can get the part # if you need it. If you have already
tried and damaged the bolt or adjuster, give Alex Sirum a call for new
ones 1-941-763-1121.
