The fact that you back fired is a sign of Ignition failure. The
"Calibrated Ignition Tester for HEI", made by K-D Tools, p/n 2756 will
identify in a minute or two if it is Ignition failure. Every GMCer
should Own & carry one in their coach (about $10 at local Auto parts
store). Simple to operate, pull one plug wire & attach the wire to a
grounded HEI tester (Looks like spark Plug with alligator clip on side).
If you have spark as the engine cranks, then low suspect as Ignition
problem. Simple look down the top of carburetor & one pump on throttle
will tell if your have fuel. Works most of the time.
A detail procedure for Ignition component failure isolation is shown in
my "The Ignition System" booklet (available at several GMC Web sites).
The failure most likely is a Ignition Module or Ignition Coil (1st
suspect). Every coach should carry spare Ignition components (not a
large number).
