Personally, I think 3,200 lbs is too heavy. I know many people who have
drawn that much weight but I gotta believe it will take a toll on the
running gear at some point. The GVWR for the GMC doen't permit it but I
would only try it if I had a '78 GMC (higher capacity) and lived in south
Florida and didn't cross some of our high bridges too often! (g)

Perhaps no ideal weight, but I tow a Mazda Protege which is about 33-3400
pounds. (I do have brakes on it). I do not find that I'm using breakes more
than without, i.e. I believe the toad is doing it's own braking. It actaully
seems I'm using less foot brake going down hills.

The brake is of the surge variety with a master cyl on the towbar. (pics at

Most of the GMCers that I know and myself tow cars that weigh no more
that 2200 to 2300 lbs. The real problem is not all stopping the car
behind you, but the excess strain of the heavier car as you tow. Not
saying that you couldn't tow the heavier unit, but it will be hard on
the transmission.

Concur. However it really depends where you live. My previous owner, Jim
Clenedenny in O'Fallon, Ill. towed a from wheel drive buick 4 door. He only went
back and forth from Ill to Florida. No mountains like the Coasts have so if
you're what might be called a flatlander you might be able to tow just about
anything. To ensure all is correct with your transmission you should get all the
CASPRO parts or his 6 speed tranny. Chuck Lompoc

When you come to CA look us up if you're on the Central Coast, Santa barbara
area. Chuck Will Lompoc, (805) 736-7965 There are five GMC's in town and a
number of them in SB and Santa Maria.
