Somebody out there can help. The GEO Tracker Seems to be a popular vehicle
to tow behind the GMC. Can some of you give me some specifics on what the
trackers configuration needs to be. Can it be 4 wheel drive? Does it need
to be a manual transmission? I don't want to do a lot of exotic
modifications like oil cooling pumps or disconnects to drive shafts. I
tried the Tracker web site and they give no help. Any comments or tips
would be appreciated. Thanks.

See the Toad section on Gene's page:

Lots of links there.

I tow a 4WD Tracker, putting the transfer case in neutral and the manual
transmission in 2nd. Steering wheel unlocked!

Bob,
I tow a 2 dr., soft top GEO tracker with 4 wheel drive. Hardly know its
there, just put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in second
and away you go. You should also have the manual hubs for the front. I
do have the speedo disconnect that cuts off the miles from building when
towing. I had seen reference to the electrical hub locking at unpopular
times from several of the RV magazines. If necessary you can get the
manual hubs from JC Whitney for under $90 for a set of 2. They are the
superwinch brand.

The GEO (same as the Suzuki) makes a GREAT toad and it is a good 2nd car for
around town, too. Both manual and automatic transmissions work fine. You do
not need any extra pumps or disconnects assuming you get a 4x4 if it is an
automatic. Don't even know if it comes in a 2x???? Mine is an automatic with
4x. All I do after hooking up is a) be sure hubs are unlocked, b) put transfer
case in neutral, c) put auto trans in neutral, and d) make sure steering is
unlocked. Real simple.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've got two specific questions.
1. Can a GEO with automatic transmission be towed 4 wheels down with no
modifications and transmission in neutral?
2. Has anyone used one of those Toad Brakes systems?

Bob--
My post just minutes ago answered #1. As for #2, I have Harrisson 6-wheel
disc brakes and have no need for Toad brakes. Before the 6-wheel discs I
couldn't stop anyway so the Toad didn't make much difference then either.

Thanks everyone for your TOAD advice. I almost stepped in it with an
opportunity to by a 2wd automatic transmission Tracker that is not towable.
You all saved me and now I know what I want and what will work.

What did you decide that would work???

John Where did you get the speedo disconnect and how much trouble to
install? I inquired about one from some co( forgot which one) and was told they
were illegal in my state and would not ship to me. I'm gaining too many miles on
my toad tho so have to do something. thought I might disconnect at speedo head
but its not easy to get at.

Bill,
I bought mine from Camping World 1-800-626-5944 or you can by direct
from Remco @ 1-800-228-2481 and ask for a speedo disconnect. I paid
$135 on sale from CW and they list it now for $149. Easy to install,
take longer to run the wiring. Power it on my towed wiring for the
running lights. When hitched to the GMC with the running lights on no
miles on speedo. Its how you hitch it up to make it legal.

John Thanks for the info. I'll get my cw catalog out and see if I can find it.
