Greetings GMCNetters,
Some observations of Forest City;
- - I concur with Jim, the GMC community embraces you as family, since you
suffer the same GMC "Affliction" as they.
- - I met many GMCNet "Lurkers" who noticed my GMCNet badge and said
hello. (Thanks, JR)
- - It was great fun to finally meet some GMCNet regulars face to face.
Hoisted a few imported Canadian brews with Mike Beaton, hoisted a few
American brews with Richard Waters, attended seminars with Paul Bartz,
conversed with Jim Bounds, Nate and Nelson over dinner, and watched
Duane Simmons and Fred Hudspeth preside over tech seminars.
- -A favorite memory will be of Jim Bounds sitting in Nate's "Sweat
Lodge", wearing a T-shirt that said: "Help, I'm talking about GMC's and
I can't shut up!" According to Jim's wife, truer words were never
spoken.
- - I noticed that the better seminar presenters qualified their remarks
just as I suppose Arch would; and I quote, "This is what I have done.
I'm not telling you what to do. It's your job to evaluate the
alternatives and decide for yourself."
- - E load range tires are recommended, but air pressure and greasey nuts
are subject to "myths".
- - Tom Winslow received an award for Second Place in the Best Original
1974 category. ( I think his GMC got an award too.)
- - For the wannabe's that always read about many and various tales of
woe, my coach performed admirably on the trip. I just pointed west and
it went, passing numerous SOB's in the process. Stock 403 and 307, no
towd's and no mountains. At the campgound, after I had started Roy up
after several days, my next door coach-owner came over to ask about fuel
injection. He assumed I must have had fuel injection since my coach
fired up so well. Nope, stock Quadrojet. 11 mpg on return trip, no wind.
- -In the absence of Dave Greenberg, I am left to represent the
"Mechanically Challenged". I am pleased to report that prior to
departing for Iowa, I, myself, did change an airbag. (He said, with
considerable braggadocio.) I now have a 1-1/16 wrench, so if you're
going to have a breakdown aound Jackson, Mich, please try to have it be
an airbag 'cuz that's the only damn thing I know how to fix! (Mike
Beaton now refers to me as the "airbag specialist".)
- -Temps were cool in Iowa, and I tried to fire up my furnace for the
first time this year. No dice. Richard Waters helped me check the fuses,
thermostat etc. no dice. Max Pardy from Buskirk- Rush took time out to
come over and investigate. Within 30 seconds he said "Well, its come
unplugged." Who knew that lack of electricity could have such an
effect?
- - For any newbies or wannabe's, there can be nothing more informative
than attending a rally like this, or the New Mexico Balloon Fest. You
can see first hand what hundreds of different people have done to
improve their coaches. Learn from their experience.
- -Spring 2000 Rally will be in Rayne, Louisiana. Fall 2000 will be in Mt.
Hood Oregon. Then 2001 in Vegas? and Niagra?
- - FWIW, do NOT stand between a GMCer and the ice cream at the Ice Cream
Social!
