Hi all!
I'm about to buy Tires to go with my Alcoas ( bought at the end of '98...
may be the last for a while). I was convinced the best choice was Michelins
until I got to Costco to order them ($115. or so, 225/75R16 LRE)
while waiting I walked around and found Kirkland Signature LT245/75R16LRE
@$75.99 per. This size is one that seems to be a GMC mainstay for some. I've
had very good experiences with Costco in general and great experiences with
their Tire department ( one of few outfits that Torque lug nuts) Warranties
etc. I'm trying to find a spec on diameter of the Michelin LT245 to compare
since some have mentioned interference at full dropped position. The
Kirkland has a diameter of 30.5", a per mile of 682 and tread width of 7.3",
wt of 3042 Any Comments? Any Thoughts?
PS Any front overcouch Cabinets with Louvered doors for sale? By the way
asoon as I get Tires I'll have 6 Radial Rims with Gruenger Flat SS Hubcaps
to get rid of.
thanks

Tires. he said very quietly. Is it possible that some of the
failures experienced by some people of their tires could be a result of
a manufacturing defect. Now, we all know that there are very few
tires, 1 in a million or less, that could be possibly
defective from the factory.
If you look at some other brands of motor homes you will see that they
also use D and E rated tires. Some of them are even heavier than our
coaches.
Is it even remotely possible that in a fit of " paranoia legalizalia sue
our butts off" moment of panic GM made a statement about tires because a
bad bunch of D rated tires made it onto their coaches. Instead of
admitting there was a problem, just tell every one to go up to the next
strongest one available. Now remember this is just theoretical. I don't
want to suggest any form of liability may have been involved.
If happiness is achieved by advice you get from someone you trust, then
this is good karma. The advice you receive is only as good as you think
it is. This is one of the many good reasons this medium exists. If
someone chooses not to accept this advice, that is their choice. Keep in
mind this is all theoretical. Stay happy. Darren

One of our club members installed 245 sized tires and found it they were
too big when he wore down his skirts!

Big isn't always better. This same guy put the biggest electric fuel pump
he could find in his 1937 Super 8 Packard limo and burned up the engine.
It is no longer a Super 8!

225x75 R16 in load range E and any named brand. What I have heard from
the Nteers is G159's or Bridgestone all steel. Seems there are very few
who recommend Michelin and fewer who recommend Costco's tires which may
be made by Michellin or Goodrich.

That's my $.02 FWIW.

How many plys is the Kirkland and does it have steel sidewall plys? I
think the Michelins are a 10 ply tire and I think they have 2 steel plys
in the sidewall.

I'm not taking a position on load range D vs E tires. I use E rated because
I didn't want to do the engineering evaluation of tires. So, going with
G159s E tires was a "no brainer."

Periodically the list goes through the tire topic. Looking over the many
postings about tires I'd like to offer two comments:

1. the load rating of tires in general is not so much the issue as the
actual working loads permitted by individual tires. In particular, GMCs are
more demanding of the sidewalls. Choosing to use E tires is easier since we
know that GM did the evaluation for tires two decades ago. But if you want
to use something else, you owe it to your self to compare the
specifications for LRE tires that were in effect in the late 70s when GM
recommended the switch.

2. Our individual experience with tires is not statistically significant.
Maybe if we could gather everyone's experience with tires by brand, year
manufactured, miles, type of defect, etc we could make some valid conclusions.

Henry,
I agree with you on the D vs E rated tires. The few extra dollars for
the G159 tire is small compared with the possible consequences of blown
tires and damages coaches or worst damaged GMC'ers.

Gil, I hope you never have to put that 22 year old spare tire on the road
for more than a few low speed miles!

One of my consideratios when buying anything is can I get warranty service
or a new part where ever I travel. Since I have never heard of Costco, are
they widely available?
LT245 tires are to large for the GMC(in my opinion).

Dave:

The Bridgestone R 265 tires I run don't have steel sidewalls.

That's right....the R265's are poly/steel. The new Bridgestone's I put
mounted are all steel and I think they are R273 or R287, probably the
former. They weigh about 50% more than the R265's and are even heavier
than the G159's as I recall.
