I said I would not get involved in the tire controversy again, but.
You guys keep it up. It is a valid subject to discuss. Keep in mind that
many people have entrenched ideas on the way of the tire world. Some
will not change their minds no matter what is said. All the past points
have been valid and all have been backed up with sound reasoning. It may
not be your reasoning but if it is sound to them, it is sound. Don't
come back to me and tell me I am causing a dangerous situation by saying
some of these guys are right. You only need to be right in your own mind
and, regardless of what is said they will not change their minds. Human
nature, don't you know. If some one wants to run D rated tires or E
rated tires at more or less than the recommended pressures because of
what they believe is fine for them. I have E rated tires and run them at
65 psi. 15 below recommended. Wrong for you, right for me, for my own
reasons. I know a couple of people who are running D rated tires with
valid reasons. It is not up to me to try to change their minds. I can
give them my reasons and they can choose to use or ignore them. Their
choice. Absolutes do not work here. A recall is only to avoid a law
suit, I believe. If they didn't think they would be sued they wouldn't
have issued the recall. My belief. Weight is the over riding factor.
Side stresses are secondary. If it is the side stress that is a concern
than only the front rear axle needs E rated tires. Not valid but
theoretically plausible. Some of the GM's on the road weigh in at over
17,000 lbs.
Too much for even some E rated tires. What should they do. Go to F rated
tires. I think a better solution would be to lighten your 17,000 lb
load. Leave some stuff at home, man.

My thoughts, not necessarily any one else's. Darren

Tongue in cheek Tom. My point was that no matter how absurd or unreasonable the
logic people will believe what they want. Our job as a group is to advise not
to demand. My comments of the post were not meant to be taken seriously just
the idea that many opinions are here and all can be used in some way or
another. It does no one any good to demand that things get done a certain way.
That is what I was trying to get across. The 17000 lb coach was told to me. I
did not personally see it. The person who passed this to me, kindly take the
reigns. Darren

Dave

You can go to any large truck service area that has scales and pay to get the
weight ($6-8) or go to a state weigh station and they will weigh it free. Of
course, if it weighs over 26,000 lbs and you don't have a CDL and a medical
card, you could be put "out of service" and given a ticket, but then you would
know why your steel belted radials looked almost flat all of the time. Of
course, you want to go at a time of day or night when truck traffic is low, or
you will have a bunch of truckers pissed off at you, for taking up scale time.
The other thing to consider, the scales only measure each axle.

Another thought, most State Police have mobile scales that are used to check
suspected over-weight truckers. Maybe you could get them to weigh each wheel
for you. This is the only real way to know if you are balanced side to side as
well as front to rear.
