Tires and Spacesuits?

You are wondering what these two have to do with each other?
A lot more than you might think.

Many of the NASA spacesuits were passed (loaned) to museums. These iconic relics have been in climate controlled cases where ever they were since the
time they were declared obsolete or surplus. Yes, that may have been 40 or 50 years by now. But here comes the real news....

They are falling apart in those cases.
This is in spite of care and very specific treatment they have received.

They know why too. The adhesives that bonded the parts together have aged out. This has happened to MIL-SPEC materials under the best care
imaginable.

This is not the only case of this. If there are any other racing sailors out here, they will confirm that the laminated sails (that have little or no
stitching) are good for maybe 8 years "On the rig or in the bag". Same Same. Then, they spontaneously de-laminate. There is no repair possible (and
this is a 3K$ problem for the owner).

Roger Marbles is an interesting fellow, I had quite a chat with him at an FMCA rally a few years back. In that chat, he very carefully said that heat
is the real enemy, but that all tires have a very limited life even if well stored.

So, if you are considering pushing the life of your tires (that are also adhesive bonded assemblies), please consider all the possibilities. A tire
is not that different than the cost of a tank of fuel.

Those of us who were at the Dixielander's rally in Gadsden three years (or four?) will remember the Member who came in his new to him SOB. Full TPMS
system including temp. No warning when the right front let go in what NASA calls "Rapid Disassembly." It took out two fiberglass body panels and a
basement door plus the Alcoa wheel. He said if he hadn't been on a bridge whose side curd stopped him, he would have tucked it in the ditch.
Probably cost $5 Large or more to repair. Tires were aged out, plenty of tread and good >looking< sidewalls. Those who run aged out tires will
please to get way in front of me so I have time to avoid the results.

Running an occasionally used, very heavily laden vehicle, like our coaches
on aged out tires is akin to playing russian roulette with all the chambers
loaded. The damage that a blown out tire causes on one of these coaches is
hard to comprehend until you have seen one firsthand.
But, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, it won't happen to you. I don't even buy
lottery tickets, but, to each his own.

I have bought 3 lottery tickets in my life, including one the other day looking at a billion six. The odds made a $2 ticket worth somewhere arpund $5
+. Ande the sxhool system needs the $2 . When the payout makes the ticket worth more'n the cost I get one. 3 times so far. Worth the 2 to
speculate what you'd do with that much loot.
