Tires... again :-)

It's time to do it.
I'm going to buy 2 front ones and rears later on after I get a little more
wear on 'em.

I'm still trying to decide between GoodYear G159 and Bridgestone R265.
(Alcoa wheels)

For those are using either, are you running a D or E load rating? Would you
but same again or switch?

I probably missed some of the recent discussions re the pros and cons of
either tire.

Is there an easy recap that someone has available that could help me make up
my mind?

Here is a repost of a previous message that I sent.

1. The Goodyear is made from a rubber compound that is called "Commercial
rubber" and that compound is what is used in over the road truck tires and
aircraft tires. It is said that it will resist weather checking better than
normal tire rubber.
2. The Goodyear G159 has one steel sidewalk reinforcing ply and the
Bridgestone has 2 polyester sidewall reinforcing plys. The people at Las
Vegas said the steel reinforcing ply tended to run cooler due to no friction
between the sidewall plys and they had a higher load carrying rating.
They recommended the Goodyear G159 over all other tires. I have heard good
reports on the Bridgestone tires. I bought the Goodyear tires because I
thought the people at Las Vegas had many miles of experience operating the
GMC motorhomes and they probably knew more about the subject than I did.
I hope that helps you. I don't think you can go wrong with either tire. So
far I have not had any bad experiences with my tires.<

I am leaving tomorrow evening for a 2K trip over the weekend. I hope to be
back Monday evening. I'll know more about the tires when I get back.

Ouch! I hate that, since I just ordered a set of the R273's.

You most certainly want to pick up "E" rated tires, the motorhome needs
the stiffer sidewall. I would also pass along some recent info I have
learned fron a customer who has looked into Bridgestone tires deeply.
Nelson W. has found that "260" series Bridgestone tires are not
discontinued and the "273" series tires have less tread (a full inch)
than the "260". I was told the "273" was a replacement, as it turns
out, there is a difference.

If you can find them, I would look for 875x16.5 "E" 260 Bridgestones.
Be sure to have them trued & balanced after driving 50-100 miles.

My tire dealer says no Bridgestone "260" in LT215/85R16 load rating E, but
there is a R265.
Would that be the one I'm after for the Alcoas?

Heinz:

You want the R265 model in 225/75R-16. That size is supposed to be 1/10
of an inch greater than the diameter of the original coach tires. I've
had them on since last July and have put close to 10,000 miles on since
with nothing but an enjoyable ride.

I'll know more this afternoon(after I visit NTB to see what actually
came in), but I pulled some info off Bridgestone's web site
(www.trucktires.com).

The R260 is not available in a metric designation. The R187 is
basically the same tire(with sidewall ribs) and is available in both
225/75R16E and 215/85R16E. These tires are similar to the Michelin XPS
with the truck style ribbed tread and steel sidewalls.

The R265 is a modified rib tread(resembles an M+S design) with steel
tread plies and polyester sidewall plies. It is available in both
225/75R16E and 215/85R16E. This is the tire that Paul Bartz has good
experience with.

The R273 appears similar to the R265. According to the web site, the
R273 is not available in 225/75R16E, but I think this is an error as my
dealer's catalog listed them and the web page shows two listings for
225/75R16D, one of which is four pounds heavier.

The 260 is for 16.5 rims only, I have used many 273 tires and have been
very haapy with the outcome. The importance would be if you already had
a 260 on the coach and wanted to match tires. I would not be upset over
your pruchase.

You are correct, I was not totally clear on that p[ost. The 260's are
16.5" tires. The 265 is a 16" highway tread and is the correct tire
when using Alcoa rims.

I know that feeling only too well :-)
As it turns out (or turned out) the R265 would be the one to use on the 16"
Alcoas, however they are only available in the US. Us Canucks have to
beg/plead and then the dealer will special order which would take 4 weeks
and megabucks due to exchange rate.

I went with a 215 in the R65 series. Readily available. Switched to 10ply
from my original 8ply though.

Just out of curiosity and since I had the alternative to zip down there, I
called Schwabb in Bellingham WA for a price. US$155, which didn't seem like
a good price watching the tire topics here. The 215's locally are quoted at
C$150.

Thanks to all for making this (gmcnet) the best source of info for our
buddies on wheels.

For comparison purposes, I paid $110 ea, plus UPS shipping, for the R265
tires I bought from a tire dealer last July and learned later that
locally # Discount Tire they wanted $105 form the R265 plus tax.

That's more like it and the equiv C$ vs US$. Here I always thought Schwabb
was a discount store... wrong again :-)
For the next set I'll try to plan it so that I can get them 'en-route'.
