Jim,

I called around the Rochester NY area and asked about trueing and they
all acted like I had two heads. Even tried a large truck tire supplier
and they said they have not done that for at least 10 years. If I get
tires and have them ballanced, is there a problem with having them trued
after putting a couple of thousand of miles on them? Do all the tires
need to be trued or just the four rears? I should be in FL some time
this summer and may jus have you do it when I am there.

Marcus, it is my understanding that all tire companies advise against tire
truing and will void their warranties if you have it done. Anyone else have
information like this?

Marcus,
I think I told you people would look at you funny, don't feel bad, I
hear that story all the time.

Yes, you can true tires after running them, actually, many people feel
it takes 100 miles or so to get the belts lined up and the bead set well
before a truing should be done! Of course if the tires receive any
damage during that time, the truing process will repair but there will
be more rubber taken to get the tires straightened out. If you had
pretty even tire wear on your last set, you will probobly be OK.

Truing the front wheels is not as critical as the 4 rear, but you will
always get a better ride and more milage performance from a perfectly
round balanced tire, this is why I recomend doing all 6. The rears are
done because of the characteristics of the susprnsion system.

Let me know when you're coming and I'll leave the light on!

Thomas,
I understand your comment about tire truing, the tire companies have to
protect themselves from "Bubba" grinding off 3/4 of the tread of a tire
then having an unhappy customer because the tire wore out in 500 miles
or this same card carrying idiot gouging chunks out of the tread that
tear up the tire.

If you don't know what you are doing, you can really screw up a tire
with essentially a lathe cutter. That is why you need to find someone
with experiance and a serious machine! The unit I use is sold is the
most accurate thing I could find, it is maintained and replacemants
parts are sold by the areas largest supply dist. for Mich. and
Bridgestone tires in Florida.

People hate to see rubber pealed off their brand new tire, there's
something eary about watching the process being done, but the outcome of
a cut round tire is better tire wear, better milage performance and a
smoother ride, I can furnish testimonials to that!

In closing, I don't blame the tire companies for protecting their tires,
you never know what meat brain mechanics will screw up next, and if
there was an obvious problem caused by an improperly trued tite, I would
not blame them for voiding the warranty, what do you think they would
say! That is why I make sure I am carefull and do my best to do a good
job on truing and balancing tires!
