Tire grief and more

Just got home from a 1000 mile and more trip. Don't know how much more as
speedometer broke on trip. I have a wheel that has a wobble which shook
awful the whole trip. Would any one have an original steel wheel, radial,
chrome plated to sell? Or anyone know who would chrome-plate a wheel? The
speedometer; Had a mechanic check it at Myrtle Beach. He said that the
trouble was in the cruse-control, that the "block" that the cable went to
from the transmission was locked up. Any help??

Neeley - I had the same thing with the speedometer happen to me on my
trip to Florida and Rayne, LA in Feb/ March. The cruise control
transducer locked up and striped the plastic gear that drives the
speedometer gear located in the side of the transmission governor
where the speedometer cable attaches to the tranny. Remove the long
cable from the cruise control and remove the short cable from the
transmission. Connect the long cable direct to the transmission and
see if you speedometer works. If it doesn't then check the plastic
gear. You can easily check this gear by removing the bolt and
bracket that holds the speedometer attachment in place and pull the
cable connection straight back. The gear is available at any GM
dealer. Mine cost $12.00. I posted the part number as little while
back and can look it up for you if you need it. There is another gear
at the bottom of the governor shaft and this one might be stripped as
well (probably not both though).

Your best bet on the cruise control is to purchase a Rostra from
Duane Simmons. This one doesn't use a vacuum servo so it will
maintain speed even when going up hills and is a lot more accurate.
I haven't ordered one yet but will do so soon. I'm tired of
repairing mine. I've taken it apart and fixed it about 3 times over
the years.

David,
This was our first long trip in the GMC, so I had the wheel bearings checked
and repacked (one bearing replaced), one brake drum replaced and one brake
disk turned. Had no bounce before the work was done but on way home bounce
was noticed for first time. Went to local tire store and had all wheels
balanced. Did not help. As front tires had some age cracks, I had them
replaced and balanced, was told at that time that one front wheel had a
wobble on the spin balancer. No help, but too late to change plans for
trip. No one in Nashville, TN can straighten wheel or chrome plate my
spare. Still looking. Thanks again for your reply.

There is another gear

Having eaten that one twice, I'll state that if it is
stripped, then the governor doesn't spin, and the tranny
stays in first gear - free-wheeling.

Neeley, are you sure it is the wheel? I can't imagine that much run out
in a steel wheel altho they are notorious for being out of round.
