Tire Date Issues

I attempted to purchase new tires yesterday. All the retailers in my area required a special order for the P225/75R16E models I was considering, and
none could guarantee the build date would be within the previous four months. Discount Tire required I purchase whatever I had them special order,
regardless of the date code. Belle Tire did not have this requirement, so I had them order a set of six Cooper Discoverer HT3s. Took my coach to
have them installed...date code was 1517, over a year old! They asked if I still wanted them, and I said "sure, as long as you prorate them."
Needless to say, they wouldn't, so I left without purchasing.

Called and spoke with Cooper Tire consumer relations department. Their response: too bad, so sad (I mean, they were nice about it, but they provided
zero attempt to get me some newer tires). Apparently, they ship to each retailer's warehouse and have no control over the particular tires you can
get. And none of the retailers were willing to have someone physically check the date codes before shipping. Finally tried reaching Discount Tire's
consumer relations department, but was mistakenly re-directed to their online operation. Lo and behold, they use a separate warehouse and said they'd
be happy to check the date codes. They had six, made within the last month, and are shipping them to my local Discount Tire store for installation.
Matched the retail price of $131 (online price was $10 per tire more), plus no sales tax or shipping charges.

Special note to John Lebetski: no Farm & Fleet here in Michigan.

Hope you all have a better buying experience than I had. First time I've had an issue with this since purchasing my coach 15 years ago.

My oldest new tires birthday is 51 of 2017. Close enough for me from my
local discount tire this morning.

Nick,

I ran into the same thing awhile back at a Discount Tire store, however, when I called their online customer service the same thing
happened to me, they were happy to check the date codes and would make sure they shipped tires that were less than three months old.

I also checked with the Tire Rack and the same thing happened!

Bottom line - forget about going to a Discount Tire store just go online, order them and have them delivered to your local store.

To all of you:

Pay special attention to the balancing they do on your tires! On the way
to GMCMI Tucson, we blew a tire in San Antonio. Discount Tire was glad to
check date codes for me and provided a tire only a couple of months old.
Since I had no balancing beads with me to have them install, I let them do
conventional balancing, with lead weights. Unfortunately, I got careless
when I picked up the mounted tire and only noticed the 1/2 oz or so weight
on the outside of the wheel. Later, when we were re-mounting the tire on
the spare rack, I saw, on the inside of the wheel, probably 8+ oz of
lead!!! By that time our schedule didn't have time for us to return to the
store, so I've still got that piece of junk as a spare.

There's no Discount Tire within 70 miles of us, so I haven't yet followed
through on my resolution: Return it to them for replacement or refund! No
tire that poorly made should have ever left their shop -- even if it was
the cheapest thing they sell.

I've now done some research on the subject of "maximum out-of-balance" and
find that MAY not be too much, by industry standards -- but it is by MINE!
I may have to live with this spare, but it WON'T happen again.

I had a tire store balance a new set of Pirelli radials on alloy wheels and
it shook so bad at 60 that I was afraid to drive any faster.
Turns out that the knock off three lug retaining nut on their
balancing machine had a broken lug caused by one of their tire monkeys
constant bashing it with a heavy hammer. Every tire they balanced that day
came back, including mine. That lug probably weighed a good 8 or 10 ounces.
Computer said 0 when it actually was out at least as much as the lug. Took
a different set of eyes to see what was wrong. They had another balancer
with the same retaining nut that wasn't broken. Swapped pieces, big
difference. Like some one said here, "About the time you think you got
something idiot proof, along comes a better idiot".

Ken
Its likely not a bad tire but a bad balance job.
They cannot use their usual cone mount for an Alcoa wheel.
Tell them they must use the mount that most of them have that use lug nuts to hold it to studs.

I had used a Discount Tire at one time. They said all they had was the cone. I told them that would not do it properly. They still wanted to try. After they balanced it I asked them to rotate it 90 degrees and rebalance it. It was way off.
They did it a third time again rotating it 90 deg on their mount and again it was way off. They checked another nearby Discount and found that they had the stud balancer attachment. I took it over there and it was balanced properly.

Ken,

Pull off all those weights and put your beads in. I'll bet it will be okay.

I bought Michelin's through the FMCA discount program. They beat the local dealers and tire rack's price by about $20 per tire. Tires were made within
a few months of purchase. Jim B trued and balanced them when they were mounted. I am very happy with their performance so far.

Did anyone else notice that there is a contradiction in the tire size that Nick the original poster
said he was trying to buy ? I don't believe there is such a thing as a P225/75R16E.
I don't think it can be both a "P" and a load range "E"

Dave,

I think you're right; load range "E" would be preceded by "LT."

Do you have to break the bead to get the beads in?

That depends on what kind of beads you are using. Some of the stuff is small enough to go in through the valve stem. I prefer airsoft beads which
are larger and requires breaking the tire bead to install.
