Heinz, It is not an old wives tail.Although the AC Filters are
"wetted"during manufacturing process, they still need to be filled with the
oil which is going into the crank case.In ALL CASE DO THIS even if the
filter is installed in a horizontal position, the small amount of oil lost
while spinning filter on is nothing compared to starved time after start up
. Do this ,take your filter, any brand.Set it on a flat surface
.Open a quart of oil and pour to the brim, notice that the level goes back
down! Fill it again, holy cow,it goes back down. With the AC brand it will
indeed take almost a full quart to fill the thing, thats due to a W fold in
the filter media vs.V fold of other brands. It is always amazing to this
simple mind that a smaller than a quart container can take almost a quart
of oil. All of this fill, saturate process happens, albeit under
pressure, while engine is turning semi-dry after filter change.
