When I first bought my current GMC (Aug 97), I needed
new front brakes, so I decided to have a lot of basics
done at one time.
At that time there was no GMCnet (at least I was unaware)
or GMC sites to help.
I had my local Goodyear Store do all the work (as I know
and trust the owner). I got new tires, brakes, hoses and ....
I replaced all the bearings! By coinsidence they used
Timken (not that I requested them). The bearings were
bought locally (ie: not thru Golby or Cinnebar).
The first rear bearing started to make noise at about
10,000 miles. FYI, it is a low frequency growl or hum.
It also will change or disappear based on whether you
put left or right pressure on your steering (ie: If I
would change lanes left - NO growl/hum, if I would change
lanes right - growl/hum). When I described this to Alex
he knew. When he hand spun each rear wheel - boy could
you tell which one had the bad bearing!
I had Sirum replace it and check the others (AOK at 10,000).
The 2nd bearing became suspect around 16,000 miles. When Sirum
replaced it, Jeff found another to be questionable.
I had both replaced. Same growl.
Until Tom's posting, I just assumed this was normal - I
think I will have Alex replace the fourth rear next time I'm
there ... "just because".
I do not know if my new bearings will last any longer -
only time will tell.
My front wheels are fine and I have since had both hubs
replaced, bearings were checked and OKd both times.
>From my receipts, Alex was about the same price as
Goodyear for the bearings - surely not enough difference
for me not to use the "GMC" bearings.
Just my experience
Thanks Tom! and the GMCnet - A lot of great knowledge here.
